Do any of you run while pregnant?

Quote  |  Reply
We are trying for another baby.  I ran the whole time I was pregnant with my first up until the day before he was born.  I ran 6 miles 5 days per week.  He is now almost 12 years old and about as healthy and smart as they come.  I ran only during the first trimester with my others, because it was just too uncomfortable much after that.  Anyway, I'm just curious to hear if there are any other pregnant runners out there and what is your story.  I really want to try and stay in good shape this time around (when I finally get pregnant).

Oh and what is the most miles you have run at one time while pregnant?  I think I once did 8 miles while pregnant if my memory is accurate.
kudos to you!!  i could never see myself running this late in the game!!  I had been on the ellipical up until my 20th week or so; then my HR kept going up, I started to have to pee every five seconds, and my chest started hurting.  My doc told me not to get my heart rate over 140-150; so running would be out of the question for me; since that activity can get my heart up to 160 at a jog.  But, I plan on going back to my HIIT plan once the baby is born in less than 2 months now!  Now I'm a brisk walker.  Everywhere.  I barely drive.  it's been working for me but lately my ankles have been hurting.
Good for you for walking.  That's what I did with my last three babies.  I could only jog with the first.

I am an avid runner, but have not been able to run since I was about 1 1/2 months. I get cramps in my lower stomach that are terrible. I resorted to fast walking on the treadmill and outside. Sometimes, I still get crampy on my lower right side. The baby always balls up down there. With my daughter, who is 5, I was able to run more. It's all about the positioning. I am 20 weeks tomorrow and I am telling you I cannot wait to get back to running after the pregnancy! I miss it sooooo much. At least I can still lift weights. Smile

I know what you mean about wanting to get back to running.  I walked 3 miles M-TH and 6 miles on Saturday with my 4th.  That was enough to keep me in pretty good shape.  I was able to start running again 3 weeks post partum and doctor said it was fine since my body was used to the exercise.  I went on to run a marathon a few weeks before she turned one.  It's doable, but it takes a lot of hard work!

Sorry to bust into the conversation, but I feel some commonalities. I am a runner too. Mostly long distances, but since I was 10 weeks, I couldn't do it comfortably. I have resorted to elliptical, stairmaster, treadclimber (awesome), weight-lifting, and long walks with weights on the weekends.  Sometimes, with my weekend walks I get like a side stitch...only its near my uterus. I figure its round ligament pain. Not sure.   I miss running terribly though and can't wait until I can do it again with a stroller.  My goal is to run a marathon before the one year birthday too!  Thanks for the chat.

My doctor friends told me that you are not supposed to do any high impact exercise that causes you not to be able to talk clearly during it (like panting heavily), during your pregnancy. Is this not true? I haven't been pregnant but hope to be so relatively soon after I get married in 3 months.

You should always follow what "your" doctor says.  However most doctors will give you the a ok to go ahead as long as you were already doing that exercise and as long as you are comfortable, not to hot, and not getting dehydrated.
