do runners do lunges?

Quote  |  Reply
OUCH! I've been lifting weights for about a month now, three days a week full body work outs. Since I'm training for a marathon, I've only been doing two lower body exercises - squats and this machine thing to work your hamstrings. Yesterday, I decided the machine thing was stupid and decided to do lunges instead. I did 3 sets of 15 reps, holding a 15lb weight in each hand for a total of 30lbs. Umm, today I am DYING! My thighs hurt very badly. This is not good for running - don't even know if I can suck it up and do a run today. My question is - do runners do lunges? Or is that something I should stay away from? Should I just do lunges without the weights? help!!

I also have a questions about squats. Right now I put a bar with 50lbs on it on my back when I do the squats, and this seems too easy. However, (and this is embarrassing) I tried the 60lb bar and I had trouble getting it over my head. So how do I increase my weight for my squats when I can't even lift the bar over my head? Any suggestions?

Thanks :) :)

I'm a beginner to running but I have seen this workout shared on this forum before when other runners have asked for advice on how they should work out in the gym to improve their running.  You probably already know about it, given that you're much more experienced than I, but for what it's worth: http://figureathlete.tmuscle.com/free_online_ article//no_business_running

Good luck on your training!  I hope I get to your level of running some day! :)

yes. runners do lunges. I do.

As for the squat..you can also cross your arms in front of your body placing your palms on your chest and rest the bar in the crease of your elbows.

Also a hack squat machine.

Yes lunges are used by runners.

You're in pain because you introduced a new exercise.

Are you performing your squats in a gym?  If so use the squat rack instead of lifting the weight overhead and placing it on your back.  The weight your capable of squatting is far higher than the weight you'll be able to lift overhead.  People who use your method of performing squats limit themselves big time.

I'm sorry, my butt is burning thinking about squats. They hurt so badly that I haven't done them in two weeks. I need to get my lazy butt in gear. You inspired me to get back to lunges and squats - but I second the notion that you're just hurting because of the new exercise. Take a day off!

Phantom butt pains... ouch...

im sure some do, but i personally do not. i have tried but they hurt my knees every time, especially the right one. and i have had my form checked, and that is not the problem, so i don't do them. i do wall squats sometimes, pilates leg series, and some light lifting for my quads if im in the mood. like you, i don't like to do so much that i can't run

Just be careful with lunges... if you do them incorrectly, you can wreck your knees. And I know, as a soccer player, that you cannot do optimal running with bad knees.

i do lunges and squats (among other things), and i run 5x per week.  They did suck at first but now they are not a problem. keep it up!

for squats, I currently have to do a smith squat (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadricep s/SMSquat.html) due to some lower back issues.  Be sure to read the analysis page as this excercise does have some caveats.  I feel this exercise is useful for people who are new to the squat.  Personally, I plan to go back to "real" squats in the off season, but I find it too risky right now in the middle of my marathon training cycle.
