Any runners in NYC?

I'm a relatively new runner, but I've known for a long time that I enjoy it.  I'd like to get more serious about it (improve time, endurance, and compete!).  Since the weather's been so crappy lately I've been running indoors on a treadmill, but generally I prefer outdoors.  I run in my neighborhood when weather permits with my dog .

I feel as if I'm getting pretty decent, but I don't know the first thing about finding runs (5k or 10k for now).  Anyone know where to start, and is anyone planning on participating in any upcoming events?

New York Road Runners is the best place to find out about upcoming runs in NYC.  See the Race Calendar at their website for a full list.  Looks like the next short race is a 5K in Prospect Park on 2/21.

If you get comfortable running 5 and 10K's, you might set your sights on a race in your neck of the woods: the Queens Half-Marathon on August 9th.  'Halfs' are a lot of fun;  you get the near-epic feel of a marathon without having to train so damn much...

The race on 2/21 is a 'qualifying' race for the NY Marathon.  Run 9 of those in a calendar year and you get an automatic entry in the following year's marathon.  And hey - you never know what you'll feel capable of in a year!

I will run my first race on March 1st through NYRR and try to qualify for the marathon.

Still, the point is to set a goal and by joining races there is much more motivation to do it seriously.

WEST SIDE HIGHWAY

It goes forever along the intrepid down the battery tunnel and there's plenty of people on it no matter what time of the day.

I never mind the ladies getting their run out at 5 am on my way to work!
