I have been an Asics advocate for a few years now.  Others swear by New Balance.  Since I'm in the market for a new pair what kind do you prefer?  And how many miles do you run before buying new ones?

I love my Asics. I've tried new balance before and I am not much of a fan.
Another Asics fan here, I'm on my 3rd pair!  I always get my shoes from the same running store.  They fit me very well so I keep buying them!
Another Asics person here....
I'm a devout Saucony fan.  They are the only brand that fit my feet well and give enough support.
I am the cliche Nike lover.

My fiance loves his New Balance though.  He has heel problems and nothing has ever fit like the New balance ones he has.

I have used and LOVED Asics, however, I typically will get holes within a hundred miles right over my large toe, so I turned to Nike Team Airs which are technically cross training sneakers, however...they have the leather that goes over the toe area.  I've used them for over 70 miles now and I LOVE them.   I  anticipate my next running sneaker will be the Nike's.

I typically run between 24 and 30 miles a week, so I do use them frequently.  The Nikes aren't as light as the Asics, but I think overall, they're going to last me longer.

My mom is a Saucony person...she lives and breathes by those.  I guess it depends on your foot, how often you run and how you run as to what sneaker will work for you.  Good luck!!  Be sure to try on many many sneakers before you make your decision.

New Balance or Mizunos... I have narrow feet, but not quite enough for the narrow sizing, so these are my best options.

I love my Asics Nimbus sneaks.

I have narrow feet and very high arch.  I inserted insoles and they're even better!

nike shox! sooo comfy =)
My first pair of running shoes a couple of years ago were Asics Gel Nimbus VIII, which I decided on after going to a running store and trying on several pair and running on a treadmill to make sure which felt the most comfortable. Since then, due in part to limited financial resources (I can't shell out $100-120 every few months to buy a new pair), I found a pair of New Balance sneakers at DSW that have worked out quite well for me. OK, not as well as the Asics, but for under $50 a pair, they have been pretty darn good.
This is very interesting...i really thought I'd get more New balance fans.  I love my Asics Nimbus Gel's and I'm definitely going with them again after this thread.  I have a very high instep and needs tons of cushioning to prevent shin splints and tendonitis and these have worked so far, so why mess with a good thing right?

I did try to get a lower end Asics (not the nimbus) and lets just say it was a wasted $75.  They sucked and now I am ending up spending more in the long run because I only used them for a month before I realized how much damage they were causing me.

Another Asics fan here! I have worn nothing but Asics for some time. I find the toe box to be a bit wider than most, better for my feet. I have tried New Balance but they had less support than my Asics.

I too use ASICS. I am currently on my 3rd pair and my 4th pair is already waiting in my closet. ASICS just gives me the support I need. I usually run around 25 miles a week plus do a step class. I change out my shoes every 300 miles or so...
I've worn ASICS forever and love them. But in recent years, my feet haven't been able to handle them. I need more cushioning and a tad more stability. Also they tend to wear out wayyyyy too fast. It doesn't seem to be the mileage either (I'm very low mileage) but rather, the material itself degrades.

So I went to have a fitting at my running store, and they recommended Saucony Grid. I wear them with Powerstep inserts. They are great - the combo solved some niggling aches and pains I was having, and the pair I bought are still going strong one full year later!!

My only gripe with Saucony's is that they stink to high heaven. It's not my feet making them smelly - they stunk horribly brand-new. Like horse manure. It's the material. I have to leave them outside the house, they are that obnoxious smelling! When I travel I zip them up in a bag to prevent the smell from getting all over my clothes!
P.s New Balance: I live near an outlet, so these would be great, but I find they are too wide for my feet and I slosh around in them.

My mom swears by NB though - not for running, for every day wear. She has troublesome feet and she lives in them. Every time she comes to visit me, she stocks up.

Hehe.  I've now run in Asics, Adidas, Nike and Reebok.  The Reebok's I'm in right now are my favorites so far, but I only have 92 miles on them and I usually don't start having issues with shoes until after 100 miles.  I keep trying to find the pair that holds up for 300 miles without causing me issues, and until I do I'll keep getting fitted for new ones.  :)  (Right now the Nike's have 205 miles on them, and once I started rotating them with the Reebok's they got a lot better, so I'm thinking I may just permanently rotate between two different pair.)

I have worn Mizunos my WHOLE life and after alot of research my latest pair that I got are Asics and I am thrilled with how they feel.  I ordered the Asics Gel-Kayano 14 through Zappos (free shipping BOTH ways) and they delivered in 2 days.  They received high reviews by Runner's World and other running sites and they have helped me a ton in managing some left knee pain that I have been struggling with.

I highly recommend Mizunos too, I have done well over the years by that brand as well.  Personally I find New Balance too heavy and **** for my preference.

Best of luck!!!
I have tried many running shoes and nothing compares to my Asics.  I have tried a couple different types of Asics like, 2100's and so on, but my favorite is Asics Foundation because they give me the cushion and stability I need since I always get shin splints.
well, I have no instep so I pronate very badly -- Asics and New Balance are the only brands of shoes that have enough support for me...  Right now I ahve Ascis but I flip-flop back & forth.
I have Nike and Asics.  For my feet, I prefer the Nike - I feel like the Asics are trying to correct my footfall when I don't need the correction - does this make sense?  I originally purchased them, b/c they are said to have the best cushion (I broke my ankle very badly and have arthritis in that foot).  They are very cushioned and I have no ankle pain when I run in them, but I don't in my Nikes either (as long as I stick to the $100+ range - lucky me).  I will stick to Nike in the future - they just feel better on my narrow, high arched foot.

Really, running shoes are totally variable - what works for one person will be awful for someone else, b/c our feet are sooo different.  For me, New Balance is about the most ridiculously uncomfortable shoe I could put on my foot.
