I think you do burn more calories if you sweat more, but it's probably not a super good idea to run when it's that hot, is it possible to wait until later?
i always assumed that it was better to jog in cold weather, but i could be wrong. my reasoning: in colder weather, your body has to work more (i.e. use up more energy) to reach homeostasis.
youll also nee dto consider how much salt your body will be losing... best to not run or if so not push yourself to the max. drink and eat well that day and rehydrate after!!! i am not a fan of those headaches! blech!
I don't have too much choice and I just did my run. I wet a bandana and wet my body and hair and then go out. I stop for about 30 seconds at the drinking fountains and wet myself again and wet my whistle. Now I'm sitting in front of a fan at home and am getting ready for lunch.
You have to be really careful and make sure that you already drank your water because you won't be able to drink it when you're hot.
I haven't had one of those headaches. But before I exercised I used to get dehyrdated all the time (I hated to drink water).
I live in Tucson, btw. it's still a "dry heat" here. What's the humidity like over there? That's a huge factor, imo.
I suggest that if anyone is watering their lawn take advantage of the water and run through it. I always did on those hot days, unless the people were standing there in the yard. And DO take water with you!
And make sure you're somewhat accustomed to heat. Like if this is the first day of this weather then go just a couple miles.
Go early in the morning or late in the day when possible. Drink as much water all day, every day, as you possibly can. And just listen to your body. I used to run about 30-40 miles a week in Washington, DC - very humid summers. And also in Dallas - very hot, not so humid. The humidity tends to affect me more than the heat, as someone else noted.
Also I usually had to slow my pace on the hot days. Just take it easier than you normally would when you do these runs until you have a better idea of how your body is reacting. Carry water bottles with you (I usually just carry them because I prefer that over a little belt that bumps up and down for the entire run).
And this is an obvious one, but choose running routes that keep you out of the sun. That will really, really help. Good luck.
I try not to run when it's that hot. It's in the 90's this weekend here (and VERY humid), and I don't run until about 9 pm. I know it's better to go in the morning, but I get out of bed at around 11 so it's already really hot. I've gotten heat exhaustion before and it was awful, so I try not to take my chances
If you're still determined to go out now, I agree with amy_blue. Make sure you bring a nice cold bottle of water with you and try to run in the shade as much as you can. Good luck!
I just had the same issue today and was considering what to do. It wasn't quite 95 degrees, but it was in the mid 80's and very, very humid. I definitely could not run as fast nor as far as I usually do. I was frustrated since I am preparing for an 8K, but next time, I will eat a few bites before I run (I took off with an empty stomach) as well as bring along a water bottle. I may experiment to see what works best for my body in the heat. Great question, peaches 122.
