ok that's stupid. running 6 mph for 10 minutes supposedly burns as many calories as running for 8 minutes at 7.5 mph just cuz you're running longer or something? that's kinda annoying.
does anyone know differently or is cc's estimation pretty accurate?

Makes sense to me.  You ran the same distance either way, so you burned the same calories. 

not true, well at least I dont believe so... because if that was true that means if you had to walk to burn the calls you would have to walk alot longer (distance not time wise) its proven that running burns calories alot faster (exponentialy), so why wouldnt this apply to the speed at what you run at?  the harder you run the more calories you burn multiples

I think you are confusing time/speed/exertion (in minutes) with distance (in miles). If you run 1 mile in 6 minutes or walk 1 mile in 15 minutes you will burn approximately the same calories however when you run, you will get it done faster. If you run for 6 minutes OR walk for 6 minutes, you will burn more calories running and will cover more distance but work out the same amount of time.

There may be some other benefits of one over the other (walking easier on your knees, running takes less time for the same calories) and some minor calorie differences, but that is the theory.

 So, the focus when your walk/running should be on distance?

Running one mile burns SUBSTANTIONALLY more calories than walking one mile, at least for me. According to my heart rate monitor.

I believe that the faster you run the more effort you have to put in.  Effort = burned calories.

Same here. I went on a 30 minute walk and burned something like 25 extra calories. WHOO I celebrated with a teaspoon of jello
