Too Much Running?

I've discovered that I unfortunately have class exceptionally early next semester (7 am), but the problem is- I'm generally not awake enough to think, and it's an engineering course. So, I was going to try to run a mile in the morning at an easy pace (6-7 mph) to wake myself up more before actually thinking.

But, I do like to run for exercise purposes as well, and was wondering if it's okay to do that and still run 3-5 miles in the afternoon after my classes are finished. 

Also, what sort of recommendations do you have for running in the cold? I have underarmor and everything, but after a while, my lungs and face start burning and it's quite annoying/painful.

EDIT: The 3-5 miles is my normal workout. I'm no marathon runner, but I enjoy running anyway.

Define "too much" - it depends on your goals and your conditioning base, not on some absolute numbers. I mean, we're talking about 10-15 minutes or running here, right? If you were to add 30-60 minutes on top of your regular program I'd be getting nervous about it due to the sudden jump in mileage. 

 You might want to track your weekly mileage and see if this represents more than a 10% jump in distance covered which is potentially troublesome from an injury prevention PoV, but aside from that, meh - it's very unlikely that you'll have any detrimental results from it as long as your other goals are compatible with increased endurance training. If you're looking to win a powerlifting meet or shot put event it would probably not be wise, but aside from the specialised needs of power athletes and injury potential I have a hard time thinking of situations where adding 10-15 minutes of running would be bad for you.

An extra mile shouldn't make a big difference if you already have a running base - just make sure you listen to your body and take a day or two off if you're feeling sore or overtrained.

Running in the cold ... not so fun! My bf's an ultra marathoner and just ran 40K today and it's -38 with the wind chill here today. (Yeah, he's nuts!) A couple of tips - use lots of layers rather than bulky clothes - when I run in the cold I'll usually wear 3 or 4 layers); hot pockets - they help keep your hands and toes warm; ensure your head and face is covered by something - there unfortunately is no getting around breathing through the material, it just plain old sucks; if it's really cold use vaseline on your face - it adds an extra layer of insulation (although your classmates might look at you funny -LOL!)

My main concern is your safety. A not-quite-wide awake runner and not-quite-wide-awake drivers can be a bad combination. If you have some place safe to run, then the small amount you are talking about won't matter.

FWIW, I find that raising my heart rate even for a very short period of time totally ends any sleepiness I might be feeling. So rather than a mile, you might be better off with just jumping rope for a couple of minutes. Maybe give that a try first and see if it helps!

Nah, it's all good.  Run if you want.  But do listen to melkor on the not increasing more than about 10% per week...so if you have to cut back a bit on your afternoon workout to run the extra mile in the morning, then do so.  If you run 4 miles per day x 5days, that's 20 miles...so you should really only add 2 miles per week....so then run 5 days for 1 mile in the morning, and drop to 4 miles for 2 days and 3 miles for 3 days in the afternoon....and then next week you can add 2 more miles in your routine. 

As far as cold, get a super light face mask...just to keep the wind off.  I personally tend to breathe through my nose and out through my mouth (it helps warm up the air a bit before it hits my lungs).  and yeah, layers are the best...but specifically face and lungs I'd go to REI and grab a light face mask...biking department usually has great gear for wind/cold.
