Congratulations!!

thanks :)

i did the same run today too! i wasn't planning on running quite as long - but i felt great so i just kept going! so in the course of one weekend i ran, in total, a marathon! :)

How long does it take you to run 13 miles?

mm a little over 2 hours. I average about 10 min/mile on my long runs.

That's amazing. I aspire to someday be able to say the words "Today is my long run day." Right now my long run consists of running for 10 minutes straight...and I run slow, so it's probably only three quarters of a mile. My running is so inconsistent. Some days I feel like I could keep going to 10 minutes, maybe even push it out to a whopping 15...other days I run for 2 minutes and feel like I'm going to pass out. What's the deal? Any insight to offer a noob runner?

just keep at it. use dory (yes, the fish) as a mantra: "just keep swimming running!" lol..

i started at 10 minutes too, and built from there. try intervals too - run 10, walk 5, run 10, walk 5, etc..

try to be persistant, and as consistent as possible. just think of all the others who don't even get out and put in those 2 minutes, let alone 10!

hey just started running and i find myself running out of breath only after 15 mins or so, any tips on this?

Thanks for the tips running_yogi. :) I like the line from Nemo...just keep running. I actually read something similar in Women's Health or Runner's World about a year ago, I used it for awhile and it really helped when I was more in shape and dedicated (also, about a year ago.)

Someone had written in and said that they struggled with hills on their runs, so they started repeating "Kill, kill, kill the hill" to the pace of their own steps and it helped tremendously. The writer also suggested replacing hill will mill, as in treadmill for those gym days where the last few minutes or miles present a struggle. "Kill, kill, kill the mill."

"Just keep running" is a little less violent. I'll switch to that one on days when I'm not trying to get out my frustration on the treadmill. Lol.

kcroyo: well, all i can tell you is try to push on through to the other side, as the late great jim morrison would say... if you can break through that 15 minute barrier, and see that you can survive to 17..18..20! maybe you'll strengthen your mentality - show it you can catch your breath back up once you get in the stride. i find the first couple miles are the most difficult for me.  after i reach my stride and pace, it gets much easier and becomes almost automatic.

Running... I personally don't like to run much(much more of a bike rider or gym exercisor), but I have discovered that it can feel great, and it is a great way to get out some pent up frustration or anger!

Yogi,

Nice work on the two halves this weekend.  Do you carry your hydration with you?  Do use one of those belt packs?  My problem is if I want to do a long run, I have nowhere to stash my water. (and i don't like doing 2 loops because i like to get as far away from the house as possible)

Some people find these uncomfortable to run with...but have you ever tried the camel packs?

They are like little backpacks with a plasticy/rubber linning and they hold up to 3L of water. There is a hose attached from the linning and you just hold the hose to your mouth whenever you need water.

yeah, i have two different camel packs, one that is like a backpack and one that is like a fanny pack.  I can't run with these because they bounce too much for me.  I do like them for long bike rides though when you need more than two bottles of water.

Is there any way to tighten them enough to eliminate most of the bouncing? (I'm just wondering because I remember being a kid running around with a backpack on being really uncomfortable...solution was to pull the straps as far forward as possible and just hold them out there while we were running. Obviously, this wasn't running for sport, mostly just playing, so holding the straps there wasn't inconvenient.)

i constantly drink water throughout the day - am peeing constantly, too (tmi? lol) - so i was actually fine without carrying hydration with me on my 13 milers.

can't think of anyway to stash it comfortably, anyway :/

my advice? just constantly hydrate every day. you'll be okay. :)

I love running, it's the most amazing feeling. However, last fall I was training for a marathon and got shin splints. Now, almost a year later, I am still struggling with them. I can only run once a week. The problem is my running isn't improving because I can't be more consistent. Anyone have some ideas to help? I've gotten new shoes, ice constantly, and massage...HELP!

heya,

unfortunately i can't help you :(  ..i've actually never gotten shin splints *knocks on wood!!*

but i would be way upset if i couldn't run every day any more :(

i used to get shin splints all the time, then they went away.  I would suggest stretching.  I know that sounds like a generic answer but it helped me.  I put my heels on a curb and point my toes down to get that stretch.  Have you tried cycling?  It's another way to get the HR up and it is no impact.  Except for your bum.  (get cycling shorts)

Cycling is an incredible way to exercise... not only does it burn calories, but it gets you from place to place, and doesn't use any gasoline Smile
