i just returned from my longest run ever! a little over 13 miles! what what! :D

and it felt fantastic! i hadn't run in a couple days - and had been cramming food down my gullet like whoaaa so this run was way needed - 1/2 marathon! maybe i'll tackle that 1/2 marathon race my home town's running club sponsors in january after all... :)

If your shin splints are being caused by tissue inflammation, a temporary fix is to take an Alieve, although I don't recommend taking one right before going on a long run. I had a problem with inflammation of the tissue behind my kneecap causing a pressure on the outside of my knee. My mother's orthopedic specialist told her that the phosphoric acid in soft drinks can be harmful to bones because it affects the acidity of blood, so it also affects the solubility of calcium in the bloodstream - in effect, it eats at your bones. I figured this may be the reason why my knee tissue was getting inflamed because perhaps the phosphoric acid was making my bones more porous than healthy bones - think of rubbing you hand over a smooth cobble as opposed to a rounded piece of pumice. I quit drinking soda, and in about 4 months my knee problem gradually went away. While I was drinking soda, a 5 mile run over my hilly route would have caused a bad pressure pain in the side of my knee, but quitting the soda has allowed me to train for my first marathon and finish in under 4 hours, despite the course being a hilly one by marathon standards.

I'm not a doctor, but this has worked for my knee pain. Since shin splints can also be caused by inflamed tissue, if you drink soda, maybe try drinking something without phosphoric acid. It will be better for your bones in any event, and you have nothing to lose but the calories.
