Running? Jogging?

Quote  |  Reply

Ok so running, and jogging, what does it really do for me? do you think i could lose weight with doing situps, pushups, jumping rope, doing squats, jumping jacks, and running for 20 minutes every day? im not so sure i want to mostly focus on running, but could i lose weight on running alone?

First thing, running  burns a lot more calories than doing sit ups push ups etc. and since most people can run longer than they can do sit ups etc. they'll end up burning more calories overall.

However, things like sit ups and push ups also help build muscle, which can help with increasing your metabolism.

But if weight loss is your goal , then running would be a great choice. You can add in a few sets of situps, pushups, jumping rope, doing squats, jumping jacks a few times a week if you want, but you should spend more time on running.

Yes, you can lose weight with just running and diet changes.  I've lost over 60lbs and all I do is run.

Eventually, your body will become very efficient at running though and you'll burn less unless you mix it up.  Eventually, when adding distance/time is not an option, do some hilly runs or an interval run to help burn more calories.

I heard that running is the fastest way to lose extra weight, and I see results when I'm disciplined in doing so. Jumping Rope also is a great Cardio workout --- I do intense intervals of Jump Rope, Push ups, Jumping Jacks w/Running included but I always make sure to do Jump Rope intervals for at least 20-40 it helps me drop weight fast... good luck

ok so running and jogging if you consistently keep at it and put your heart into it, then yeah you could loose weight, it works a good range of muscles, ups the heart rate, and burns calories.

you can also burn a signifacnt amount doing jump roping, like speed ropes especially, but like with running and jogging you really gotta keep at it!

sit ups, pushups, squats those are toning and strength, not cardio. cardio is what burns fat and increases matabolism. toning and strength are also important though, as it helps with creating muscle, and toning that muscle which burns calories on its own. its good to have a balance of both.

essentially anything that raises you heart rate will burn fat and helpf you loose weight. so if running isnt your thing you could try biking, skating, swimming, etc. try picking up a sport with a group in your area maybe that would fit you better than just running?

i think im going to start running tommarow or monday i think. just gotta work out with my parents where i could run, cuz my neighborhood isnt exactly the safest lol. thanks for all the information :)

Looking for a good running program that is realistic? Try the couch to 5 k. Google it. It starts out with intervals of running/walking. By the end you will be able to run 3 miles or 30 minutes. I am over 1/2 way through it. I love it!!!

Running is AMAZING for losing weight---but, you need to avoid injury.  If you aren't running at all, don't start out with a full 20 minute run every day.  Alternate walking and running in about 5 minute intervals at first, and work your way up.  STRETCH afterward, especially your quads.  And speaking of quads, those are the most likely muscles to get injured by running, so keep up some strength training to prevent that from happening.  Most most MOST important, if you get a muscle strain, let it heal and don't push it.  Take it from me, I got a pretty nasty injury that way.

You can lose weight doing anything (whether it's running, doing pushups/situps, sitting on the couch all day watching TV, etc) as long as your diet's right.

Running and other steady state/endurance type exercises tend to burn muscle along with fat so lots of people lose lots of weight by running but actually see their body-fat % increase during that time.

i also did the couch to 5k and i just finished the program! i'm registered for a 5k this weekend! when i first started i could barely complete the 90 second running intervals. it definitely worked for me!

That's exactly what happens to me when I just run which is too bad because I love running. Unless you have some running related goal, I wouldn't advise it being your sole method of exercise if you want to lose fat
