running/jogging PAIN!

Quote  |  Reply
Ok, so I've been running for about 2 months. I run about 3 miles daily at about an 8.5 mi/hr pace, but I do spurts of sprinting and lighter jogging during my run. ANYWAYS, lately after I run, I get cramps that feel EXACTLY like the cramps I get around that time of the month. Any ideas?

After just two months of running you're at 8.5 mi/hr?  Wow.  My husband's been running for 20 years competitively and he's at 10 mi/hr on a 20k.  So what's your secret?

You should consider competing.

You might have runner's trots.  Google it.
I get the same cramps...

Try stretches that target your hip flexor.  Yoga helps me the most.  Always stretch before and after your run.  Also incorporate a warm up and cool down into your routine.

Make sure your well hydrated before you leave and when you get back.

Also check your breathing in and out through your nose... out through your mouth when you tired, never breathe in through your nose.

You can also try running with your hands behind your head that can help stretch your torso.

When are you eating?  If you are eating alot before you start running that may be the cause... or if you are eating too little for the day.  Always make sure to recover with protein and a little bit of carbs :)

Good Luck!
I meant never breathe in through your mouth SORRY! haha
You might try slowing it down. Go at about 9min/mile pace or slower, for longer. It will get your body more used to running, and may cut down on the cramps. Plus, it's good to keep your heart rate up for longer periods.

skinny kitty I meant a 8.5 min/mile...oops!
I run about the same as that but do 6 miles every Tuesday and Thursday. I have started getting really bad cramps in my biceps, and this is really odd because I have been running for about 2 years now  and have never had this problem before. I think cramp in general is to do with your electrolyte levels, that could be sodium, potassium etc - involved in nervous responses. I guess just make sure you've included these ions into your diet somehow - Marmite I find is good for sodium.. Pah, I'm not a dietitian, just a scientist! lol
