running outside makes treadmill seem . . . weak.

Quote  |  Reply

I'm sore in my legs again like after my first day on treadmill HIIT.

I did the same # of sprints in the neighborhood yesterday and boy are my legs tired.

OTOH, the treadmill really tightened up my midsection through the HIIT, and when outside I only felt in my legs.

Either way, I'm just blabbing because i hate running outside where there is always a chance of a stray dog. I want to run because I want to, not because I HAVE to.

thanks WG... i also looked up some other shin exercises to do.

We have a TV down in the basement with the treadmill. I get DVD's of TV shows and follow them. Really good ones to work out to are The Shield, The Tudors, and 24. The Tudors used to get me really revved up for the workout! Also, its a good way for me to get to watch movies. For me, exercise is "me" time and "grown up" time (I have two little girls) so being able to have a non-Dora-the-Explorer-related movie, where Elmo is NO WHERE TO BE FOUND, is a reward for me.

I did, however, just get back from a week in North Carolina where I ran outside every day - wow! The impact was much higher. I think its good that I get used to that as my half mary is in October, but I really prefer the treadmill...

i really wish I could have one at the house! i use the one at the office gym. No TVs allowed. :/

and the sad thing is I don't even want to watch TV, I want to plug my music in and watch the crazy designs that windows media does LMAO. I just need something to look at besides the instruction chart for the machine they have in there that has all the typos.

Reading while walking (I can't run yet lol Embarassed) seems like it'd make for a good slip and fall on my face while sliding down the treadmill to the floor with my dog staring at me the entire time...

I'm extremely clumsy, but... I think I'm going to try it, with magazines (less reading and more pictures to look at instead maybe). I can't believe you were able to read going at 4mph at that incline! Holy crap! I walk my fastest at 3 with no incline and sometimes I can't keep up and have to lower it to 2.8. I feel so... weak now, haha, I hope you're tall and take big steps so I can feel better, hehe. I'm 5'4".

LOL...I kind of padded my resume a bit...most of my reading on the treadmill sessions were at 3.5mph starting with no incline, then 5 deg, then 10.  Then I started walking faster.  The treadmills at my school's gym had cup holders on each side and a little ledge thing below the display.  I put my water in one cup holder, my iPod and tissues in the other (I have bad allergies), the book on the ledge and got to work.  As it got harder I had to hold on the the rails though to keep from moving too far back :).

Others on this thread have mentioned music.  Seriously if you get some pumped high BPM songs you should get in a groove and be able to stay there without getting bored.  Some of my favorites are "Disturbia" by Rhianna, "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns and Roses, "Blue" by Eiffel 65, and the Numa Numa song.  Rock/pop gets me going. Oh and 80's pop stuff is really good to--"Hey Mickey", "Take On Me", etc.

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
