Running question

Do the calories you burn running/walking depend on your heart rate or the distance? For instance, would you burn the same amount of calories walking a mile than running one?

I think the standard/average is 100 calories burned for every mile. Heart rate and distance are somewhat related imo.

If you walk and have a lower heart rate it will take let's say 20 minutes.
If you run and therefore have a higher heart rate it will take less time.

So in 30 minutes of running you'll burn more calories and go a further distance than walking for the same amount of time.

the calories burned depend on the distance.  a mile is a mile.  some people, however, believe that by performing your cardio at a lower heart rate, you'll burn more fat that if you perform your cardio at a higher heart rate.  it's debatable. for me, that appears to be true.  however, since i don't have the time to walk twenty miles a day, i choose to run, if you know what i mean.

The calorie burn for running depends on your speed, the time you spend running, and your weight, just like every other type of cardio. No, you don't automatically burn 100 calories per mile, either. I've been running for 15 years, so I've figured my calorie burn many times.

Use the exercise log on CC. Type in running, it will ask for speed and time. This is what your calorie burn depends on.

Here's an interesting article at Runner's World that discusses this very topic!
