Running skirts
There are several articles in this month's Runner's World on running skirts. I saw many women wearing them at the Fargo Marathon that I ran in May, and I kinda liked the looks of them! They are cute, and still look sporty and serious at the same time. Supposedly they are just as comfortable as shorts, as the majority have shorts built into them.
Anyone wear these? Any thoughts or opinions? I think I'd like to try them out but would like some advice if anyone has any!
Thanks!
I wear them -- mine are skorts (skirt with shorts inside). Actually I usually wear them to ride my bike a lot -- I'm not up to spandex bike shorts status yet -- the lack of a center seam makes them more comfortable than anything else. I also wear them on the treadmill, elliptical, etc -- I find them very comfortable and if I have to stop someplace on the way home from the gym (I hate doing that), I don't feel quite as obvious (although my face is red and my top is sweaty, I'm wearing a skirt...)
I saw the same articles in Runner's World and my hubby thinks they're great. I'll be getting one shortly, I think. :)
I have one and have had mixed results. The first time I wore it it was great, the second time my thighs chafed really badly. The shorts had crawled up. The last time I wore them they were fine.
They do get a lot of stares!
Personally - NO WAY!!!! I am an avid tennis player and runner and I never mix the 2 - I think they stole the idea from the tennis world! When I run, I want to feel strong, athletic and fit - the skirt just doesn't do that for me. Leave them for the tennis courts and keep the runners in the short shorts - Not only more comforable but more practical IMO - :)
i'm one of those people staring. why in the world would you want a skirt on top of shorts when running? i understand for biking or tennis or walking but RUNNIGN!?
The benefits are that the shorts are tiny (comfortable) and the skirt covers the tops of your thighs. It ends up being very cool . I think it's attractive too.
Thank you to everyone for your responses, I think I will buy a pair and try them out! ![]()
I LOVE RUNNING IN THESE SKIRTS!!!!!
For me, it eliminates the upper thigh chafing problem. Every kind of shorts I owned gave me chafing, except tight little bicycle shorts. Well... I don't exactly want to run in tight little bicycle shorts... I don't think people need to know exactly what my butt and thighs are shaped like! The skirt/skort gives the perfect solution. Tight little undershorts to protect from chafing with a skirt on top to hide your shape.
They're cute too. But yes, people will stare. I recently went to a neighborhood BBQ thing where everyone recognized me as the "skirt runner" and wanted to know they why's behind running in a skirt... of course, I was more than happy to share my discovery.
I tried on a couple of skorts yesterday by Nike and Adidas, they felt comfortable and I could imagine running in them, but not in just any weather. Plus the combo of socks and short skirts makes my legs look like tree trunks :(.
Amazon has THIS ADIDAS one that normally is $40+ for $19.99 and it's Prime eligible. I'll give it a go, this should be fun
No small or XL though, just med and large
Runner's World had 'test driven' quite a few, and I was eye-balling 2 in particular that were both cute, and had the features I am looking for. I can't remember the brand names now (I'm at work).
I love shopping!!!![]()
I absolutely LOVE running skirts! I have 3 and wear them all the time. Like others, I'm unwilling to wear little spandex shorts because, well, they look awful. But regular shorts invariably ride up my leg and get caught above my upper thighs (which are larger than I'd like them to be, as I'm sure the rest of you feel as well). This means my shorts are always bubbling above the crotch area. This also looks awful!
Running skirts have well-fitting spandex shorts underneath that fit well and don't ride up. Then they cover that with a little skirt that doesn't get in the way, and looks cute at the same time. It does NOT feel bulky in any way, in fact, it feels light and airy. I don't understand when women say they don't feel as "strong" or "athletic" in them. Are you still running a half marathon? Yes? Then you're strong and athletic.
I run in a tutu and tiara when I want to feel strong and athletic.

I'm not a runner, but I have worked out in the skorts and I love them.
Well, I bought one today and ran 4 miles in it. I liked it, but the the little shorts did ride up a some. So I think for anything more than 4 miles I'd want to lube up with some Body Glide. But otherwise they worked well. I felt cute (
), and strong and athletic. They one I bought was one from Target, so I can't expect great things from department store clothing, my next one will be a quality name brand.
I ran in a skirt, and I liked it!!!!!
