This is an interesting (and motivating!) study from Stanford School of Medicine:

Well, the conclusion really should be "exercise slows aging" - there's nothing special about running as such.

Move around more - it's good for you ;)

Great article! I think that there is something to be said about running specifically.  Because of the impact from your feet hitting the ground you are building stronger bones.  Also, one of the major concerns about running is joint problems and this study has found (so far) that there have not been any more joint problems then in people run opposed to those who don't.

savin: I think that's what I found interesting... My excuse for my half-hearted running attempts has always been the "joint problems" one, and I'm surprised that over time any potential problems are outweighed by the benefits of the activity.

melkor: I agree completely... I was more interested in the aspects of the study that show that the negative physical effects of running are minimal over time. I have a major love/hate relationship with running (have been "beginning" for about a year now) and I try to read anything that encourages me to hit the pavement :) What I think is so valuable is that it's really an exercise that you can take with you anywhere... unlike an elliptical.

What a cool article - thanks for posting it!  I think I'll go for my daily run now :)

But it makes you FEEL older . . . hahahaha. At least when sweating and sucking wind up a steep hill. Oh, and yeah, I AM older, so I guess it will feel that way!

I'm glad to see that the long term impact of running (no pun intended) is as positive as it is. I've worried about my knees a lot--trouble started when a basketball player in middle school, continued through my 20s with running. But now I trail run exclusively on trails and so far, no problem. I hope it stays that way!
