How fast can you run a mile?

How long/far can you run before having to stop?

Heart problems run in my family, and though I'm no longer overweight, I want to decrease my risk (and be as healthy) as possible.  I already eat clean and such, so I've been jogging/walking two to four days a week.

I want to set an attainable, but challenging, goal for myself,  so I thought I'd ask around for advice and averages.

Thanks  :)

i run about a 5:30-6:00 minute km....not sure if thats good or not, but its good enough for me!! when i first started running in march, i was horrible. i started out jogging 30 sec then walking 30 sec. by increasing intervals, i've managed to get up to jogging 3:30 sec at a time. again, maybe not super, but awesome for me!! i have asthma, but i've found jogging has helped alot...i need to get back into it again.

on a good day, i can run 5k in under 28 minutes.  that's 3.1miles, so about 9m/mile.  if i were running only a mile (1.6k), though, i could do it considerably faster than that.

Well, if you are looking for a good fitness goal you might try a 5K beginner training plan.  Everyone's pace/ability is different so dont compare yourself to others.  There is a Learn to Run thread in this forum that is excellent.  I would also look into body strength:  can you do a few pushups, how about a pullup?  How high can you jump?  Can you do yard work?  Lift everyday objects?  Help move a couch?

If you had to disable or free yourself from an attacker, could you do it?  I highly recommend self-defense training as well as athletic goals.  Just sayin.

Good luck.

I've also got heart related problems in the family. My dad runs like a maniac(i'm talking 2 hours a day. He's run the Boston, New York, Chicago and other marathons..and he's quite severely asthmatic. go figure)

I've started to run(through a jogging class) And I can do about 2 miles in a bit less than 20 minutes. Much farther of a distance than that right now isn't something I can do with ease, or speed.

It definitely is all about working up to distance and pace. Start out with what's doable for you.

I'm of the mind set "slow and steady wins the race!" I run slowly but have good endurance so my miles are about 10- 10 1/2 min. Maybe it's called Trotting :-) But I can run 4-5 miles consistently. I'm not going to win any races but my B/P and pulse are awesome; my last cholesterol, LDL, HDL numbers are great showing very little risk for cardiac disease (my father had his 1st heart attack at 50 and years later died from one) and my bone density study done 2 weeks ago is normal- super for a woman in menopause b/c most of us have started w/ some osteopenia at the very least. My point in telling this info is that you don't have to be fast to get health benefits from running. If you try to go too fast and too far too quickly you may get discouraged, or injure yourself which could sideline you from exercise for a while. Be smart about your goals and good luck!

I'm at about 8 min/mile right now, but still training to do a 5k.  I'm on the last week of the Couch to 5k Program.  You should check it out, it really helps.  It made me into a runner... I hated running before.

Currently running 2-3 miles during lunches (the dark nights are setting in already in Scotland so cant run after work).

I used to be able to run 7 min miles for 3-4 miles! :-S
And thought nothing of a 4 mile run along the beach in 30 mins.

PB was 6 miles in 45mins but I was very angry and competitive that day, ha ha.

Entered a 10km (6.2 miles) in 50 mins

My running fitness peak for stamina, speed and distance was a year ago.

But I've slacked off BIG TIME, excuses excuses, I moved home,  and a new relationship perhaps has influenced me, but I'm so scared I'll end up a big fat couch potato again so I want to kick start the running.

I'm literally just back from a run - 2.5 miles in 20 mins.
I am NOT happy with that.

I might be somewhat of a hard task master on myself.
I cycle 40 mins a day, so my legs cant decide which exercise they dont hate the most! lol
I have no idea how fast I could run 1 mile....but the longest I'm allowed to run (recovering from stress fracture...slow uphill climb!) is 7 miles, which I usually do at about 8:30/mile.  I'm sure if I were only running 1 mile it would be much faster!  :)
