Hi All!

Any runners on here?!  I've recently started (well, more like jogging lol) and was wondering if anyone had some tips!

Thanks!

Colleen

i posted a good beginner running program here

is that what you're looking for?  the only other tip i have is make sure you get the right shoes.  if possible, get a proper analysis in a running store.

good luck!

I've started using the program recommended by Runner's World. After a good week of walking from 20-30 minutes, they start beginners off with the following:

Days 1-4, run 2 min, walk 4. do this sequence 5x's.

Days 5-8, run 3 min, walk 3 min. do this sequence 5x's.

Days 9-12, run 5 min, walk 2.5 min. do this sequence 4x's....and so-on.

It goes on for a recommended 10 weeks which builds you up to 30 minutes of straight running. I love their website and use their Runner's log, which lists this whole program in it. (I bought the little log book, rather than logging online for sake of convenience.) I highly recommend this site and mag. as I'm also a beginner and they seem to always have something for me.

The best advice I've got for you is find some potassium before you go.  'Cause otherwise, you may get some pretty yucky cramps.  I had to learn the hard way.
Yes, I have a tip... DON'T RUN DOWN HILL!!! Well, it's ok if it's only slightly downhill... There's more impact on your knees when you run downhill, plus you have to run faster to get your heartrate up... And that can really hurt your knees. I learned the hard way. I couldn't even walk, the only exercise I could do was biking and even that hurt my knees a little bit.

Thanks for the advice!!

Downhill running, when done properly and within moderation, is very important to a running plan.  Running hills (up and down) help to lengthen your stride, aloowing you to cover more distance with less effort.
