Running Tips-Please!!

Quote  |  Reply
I have never been a runner, but I want to start. I can only run in short bursts right now. Any suggestions on how to build stamina? I have never been able to run a mile without stopping, not even as a teenager when I was normal weight. Now, I am overweight and I am trying to get in shape for my health. I can go an hour on the elliptical machine and I can walk for miles, but the running....how do you do it? My goal is to someday do a 5k run. Any suggestions?

I can't wait till my boobs shrink!!! I'm a DD, and only 5'4. I have to wear a regular underwire and a small sports bra on top. Just to keep from knocking myself out, lol. It's so very important that you have support in that area - you can kill your back. Good luck!

BTW I am DD and I've had the worst worst worst time with my boobs! lol. Whether jogging or horse back riding (ouch) I was always so jealous of girls with smaller boobs because mine just HURT if I went too fast. =( I've finally found ONE bra that works though. They're expensive and they feel like you're wearing a freaking piece of body armor at first, but after wearing them both jogging on foot and trotting and loping on a horse I've decided it's totally worth it.. I feel completely "stable" up there! It's seriously amazing.. and (for those of you who like detail) it may LOOK like you get the uniboob due to the tightness of the material coming across your chest, HOWEVER your boobs still stay separately in place, not squished together like most of those other crappy sports bras I've tried.

And I wouldn't be recommending them if I wasn't really happy with my own and completely sure you want one, believe me.. I actually heard about them through another CCer. =) Happy non-sagging.

You know, looking at those, I realize my roommate in college had one (or something like it)!  She was a dancer and a horse back rider and a DD so she had to have a really, really good bra.  She swore by that thing!  I've been doing the double sports bra thing at the gym, and I still jiggle all over the place, so maybe one of those enell things will help. Yay for not sagging!
I'm a D to a DD and I found that even walking I was bouncing around uncomfortably so I went out and got a shock absorber sports bra in a slightly smaller band size than I was used to, and it's amazing. I feel so much more comfortable and in so much less pain now! Also less like I look like I'm attempting to juggle body parts..

i have a running question too:

running on my tippy-toes or on my heels?

aiseiah~

heels first!

I agree with the running slow part.  My mom has been a runner for many years, and she said the most common mistake was that people try to run too fast in the beginning.  When you start it should only be slightly faster than fast walking.  Also learning to breathe is important- taking longer breaths and not short ones so you don't get the side splits.  :-)

i love to run but the boobies are a bit of a problem. i wear an 18 hour bra, than a walmart 1 size to small sports bra and than a nike sports bra. i dont want my boobs to go anywhere.that combo keeps them still, but hurts on my ribs where all 3 go around me. but thats the only way i can exercise. any thing less they're all over the place.

I'm on week 1, day 2 of the couch potato routine and although I can probably run further I stop myself because I have a history of bad knees from when I ran long distance as a younger woman.  I love this routine.  It really does work.  As for the sports bra issue.  I have ddd breasts.  I wear two sports bras and a regular bra to run.  I have never been able to find a sports bra that can support me by itself.  It's frustrating but I like my girls firm to my body with no jiggle when I run or I'll end up sweeping streets with them in a few years.
I have a question for those of you that have been running..does running help change your body.. can you see the difference with running? Does running help you with weight trainign.. I am just curious because I want to start running but would like to know the benefits instead of the elliptical or other machines
I love running mostly because it's a stress reliever.  I'm a high school teacher so I need stress relievers.  I found that with my knees doing strength training actually helps me with running.  Calf raises seem to work the best for me.  I use to run about 45 minutes 3 times a week but I slacked off during the holidays and have to work back up to where I was.  The eliptical is great too because you are getting the benefit of the upper body by swinging your arms on those handle bar things.  I guess it just depends what you prefer.  I think they are both good.  I live in Florida so I like to be outside.  Sometimes I get bored working out inside, especially when the weather is so nice outside!  Sorry to those of you who live in snowy places!!!!  :)

yea i do notice how my body changes when i run. i went  running every day for 3 weeks and there was a significant change in my body. i was losing inches and my posture improved greatly. you know how you stand up straight when you jog to breathe better.  i was not dieting or anything, but i did lose like 20lbs in 3weeks. idk what it is with me. i always lose about 20lbs in the first 2-3weeks tho. i also started to eat better just because i felt better from the jogging. and normally thats all i really do is jog. i dont do much working out otherwise.

i started running for the first time in my life last november. before then i had never even run 800 meters! i quit smoking last september and i also cycle. i wanted to star exercising more so i took up running.

my advice is , don't give up, even when you have a bad day. i currently run a track 3.2km long. at first i couldn't run a single km.  then after about a month i found i could run 2km without stopping. the hardest part was to keep going. if i stopped to rest, i couldn't run the last 1.2 kms. i would have to stop every few hundred meters and walk. my breathing was also terrible. now i breathe in through my nose, and out through my mouth. granted this can be hard to keep up and its taken me months to do this only half the time. the first time i did the whole distance it took me just under 25 mins. this morning i cracked 20mins (just) for that distance.

for awhile in the middle i hit a plateau and couldn't run my whole distance which was very disheartening. but i kept going, and every time i run now, i beat my last PB. and i love it! i feel strong, and healthy and fit. the muscles in my legs are more defined, and my legs look great! i'm sure my cycling helps with that too, though.

i haven't lost a great deal of weight, but i have lost inches, and i'm fitting into my "skinny" clothes again. in fact i've only lost 1kg in the last few months. i look like i've lost about 5 or 6 though, which is what matters. in 6 months time, i'll look like i've lost 10, and i will probably have only lost 3 or 4. i weigh around 74kg now and i'm 5"7, and i've realised my 10kg weight loss goal is unrealistic. i'd still be in my bmi range, but i can't get that low unless i wanted to train for a marathon or a triathlon, which i don't. i'd have to have hardly any body fat to weigh 64kg. i used to weigh that, but i had no muscle, and i ate next to nothing.

i only run twice a week, but i'm upping it to 3 times a week now. just keep at it, and you'll be running your way to a better life in no time.

hmm this post got a bit long, but i was hoping to inspire.

Thanks!  I am really motivated to start walking..running.. jogging.. I just want a new challenge and I am thankful for all the advice!
