Running is higher impact on your joints.

Cycling requires equipment.

Other than that - there's no rule you can only do just one - see which you enjoy more, or do both.

They both are great exercise for your free time. Cycling has the advantage that you can also incorporate it as a means of transport - and in big cities only a scooter will go faster than a bike. So you don`t really need to take time from your daily routine to get a good workout, but rather you can get a good workout as part of your daily routine. And then add some extra exercise on top of that if you`re feeling perky.

I love that you can ride a bike comfortably dressed however you like. On the other hand, it does require equipment and can be rather dangerous depending on traffic conditions.

Anyway, it`s always a good idea to vary your exercise to keep your metabolism running at its best, so you can alternate between them.

If you are equally profecient in both, you will burn more calories running [ie: coasting downhill on a bike compared to running downhill on your feet]. Both are incredible exercise.

It does come down to prefernce.

I run about 3 days a week and use the bike as a cross-training tool. It has opened my eyes to the world of triathlons as well. I started competing in running races but kind of tired of that. This season, I have toured on the bike from Burlington, VT to Montreal, CA and use my touring as a form of strength training. The running burns calories but the cycling builds muscle more. It also allows to cover more ground than what you can run. I can go for 100 miles on the bike and it feels like running 10.

swim, bike, AND run :-)
