Is running going to give me wrinkes and saggy...

Quote  |  Reply
boobs? I recently started running quite regularly, and I've been enjoying it very much. I feel like it is a better workout than the elliptical, and, as long as I am outside, it is much more interesting. My Mom and my brother told me tonight that running will not only give me jowls, but wrinkles and saggy boobs. This is apparently a result of all the pounding/bouncing/jiggling/impact. They said that I should stick to the elliptical if I don't want to start looking old...soon. Have any of you know anything about this? I hope its not true! Thanks in advance for your help!

I seriously dont think this is true.  Wrinkles are caused by aging, smoking and not caring for your skin properly. Saggy Boobs can be caused by excess weight gain, and inactivity (and aging).   High aeorbic activity such as jogging pumps tons of blood and oxygen to your cells, and is really quite good for you. Not to mention your cardiovascular health increases, and you get weightloss and toning benefits.  I think your comrades are picking on you because they are lazy and jelouse.  Keep it up girlfriend!  You will reap the rewards soon enough!!!!!

PS ive noticed the more I exercise, the perkier the "girls" are.  My bras are fitting better too.!!!!  :0)
just remember to wear sunscreen, no matter what the weather, and you'll be fine  :-). to much sun it not good for the skin.
Thats exactly what I wanted to hear! Thanks so much absterry! All that positivity, I already feel like tomorrow is going to be a great day -- maybe even with a great run! - I wear sunscreen every day as it is, I hate the idea of aging faster than I will naturally.

Phew!

I dunno - You 're never too young to think about these things - I know a woman who was on the LPGA circuit and her facial skin was NOT good. I have another friend who is a Tennis Pro - face skin is not good - even worse. And a neighbor who was an avid golfer - ditto.

But two these ladies are in their 50's and one of them is dead. If you're young, and now there are much better sunscreens and lotions out there - just wear a hat I guess.

Just curious? What is a jowl? Ive never heard this term and dont know what it is.   Also Mcoll3 are your mom and brother in/out of shape?  If not then they really dont have much room to talk.   Maybe try getting them in on the walk/jogging action if the comments continue.  Perhaps turn it into a family affair.  Not to mention the added saftey in numbers factor.   LOL then you can laugh at your bro when you kick his butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!! heheheeeeee
My brother plays rugby and my mom works out quite regularly. They are both more overweight than me (my brother's bmi is 'obese' and my mom's is 'overweight' but we have always been built big but fit). My brother usually rides his bike and my mom does classes at the gym, so they are in decent shape, but I'd definitely beat them in a race if they tried me! I kind of wish my brother would challenge me, he still thinks he is faster than me because he was in highschool, but I'm sure that is no longer the case!

A jowl is defined as "The flesh under the lower jaw, especially when plump or flaccid." It is uncommon in young people, usually older people have it, and younger people if very overweight but it is mostly associated with loose skin rather than fat. It is as if your cheeks begin to sag and hang past your jaw. It is not a double-chin but is probably equally as frightening. Think Winston Churchill.
What give you wrinkles and saggy boobs are breakdown of elastin and collagen, which is the underlying framework of the skin. It renews itself when you are younger and slows down when you are older -- it's purely genetic.
Pardon my language but if they are feeding you that crap then they are obviously full of shit.  Exercising the way you do will not only tighten and firm the skin, but also prevent that awful jowel thing from happening.   I have NNNNNEHEVER seen a fit person with sagging cheeks!!!!   You keep at it girlie.   Once your ready you should challenge your bro yourself and show him up!!!!!  I have all the confidence in the world in you sweetheart!   Just keep your head high and ignore that BS.

As the cheerleaders put it.... Thats alright, thats OK your gonna pump my gas someday!!!!!!! LOL
hahaha, absterry, you are awesome! Not only have you made my day, but you have made my WEEK! You bet I will keep at it, and leave them in my dust!
Be sure to wear a really good, supportive exercise bra. Your breasts shouldn't jiggle and flap around when you run.

As for wrinkles, there is some evidence suggesting that marathon and ultramarathon runners may have a higher incidence of skin cancers. This can be avoided by consistent use of sunscreen - be sure to use a waterproof one formulated for sports use, so it doesn't wear off when you sweat. And also wear a hat with a brim.

Sunscreen use is the absolute best thing you can do to guard against wrinkles. Take a look at my profile - I'm 42, fair-skinned, and I smoked for 20 years (quit last year). You would think I'd have more wrinkles than I do. But I've been wearing sunscreen every single day - rain or shine, snow or not - since my early 20s. I only have some very fine lines around the eyes, which are barely noticeable except in strong light.

Unfortunately I wasn't as consistent applying the sunscreen to my chest, because I worried about ruining my clothing. So you can see my true age if you look at the skin on my chest.

EDIT: LOL, silly me, I just realized I'm wearing big dark sunglasses in my photo!!!! So you can't tell anything by it. Oh well... that reminds me: wear dark sunglasses, it helps too!

And yeah, I am developing some jowls as I age...
Jenmcc - you definitely DO NOT have jowls, and definitely look younger than 42! I been wearing spf lotion on my face since I was about 20 (I am 24), and I hope that it will ward off wrinkles! I guess I should also apply to my chest all the time too, though I usually don't think about it. I hope that I look as good as you do when I'm 42! Also, congrats on quitting smoking!
The spots that show the sun damage the most, and thus "age," are face, chest, neck, and hands. Don't forget the hands (sunscreen)! Next time you see one of those smooth-faced celebs, check out their neck and hands -- gives them away every time!

as far as saggy boobs go, i have very large ones between a DD and E, i wear a reagular bra, sports bra, and one of those tight tank tops made for exercising, all under my shirt. this gives me adaquate support and they dont hurt from 'bouncing'. and i too have noticed a bit more perkyness since i started working out regularly. boobs are mostly fat so loosing weight in general can make them sag but tonning muscle underneith can help that, also not drastically loosing weight, and allowing  you skin to slowly go back with its natural elacticity will help them not sag.

*edited because i realized what i wrote didnt make sense*

OK, I've got the same problem since loosing 40 pounds............saggy boobs. Any suggestions for an exercise to help with this??? I've heard that exercising the chest muscles may help to tone them a little.

i've lost 75 pounds, running and weight training is how i did it, my boobs are more perkier than when i started.  just make sure you have a good jog bra for the support, spend the $50 its definatley worth it.  make sure you are doing weight traing as well, strengthen the chest muscles.

It is certainly interesting what people believe about exercise. Your boobs will not sag because you run. They will because of ageing. I've been wgt training & eating well according to book called Cardio-Free Diet. (Saw the author on tv) Done 3 months now. Next week will start running. Not cuz author says I can but because I want to. I am feeling so good. I wasn't very overwgt, but it was enough that I didn't like it. So far I've gone down 18 lbs. Can't believe I had that much to lose.

I really suggest wgt training. Toned muscles feel great, look good too. And the more muscle you have, the more calories burned. Measured everything at the beginning in June and took new measurements last week. My chest decreased 3 inches! Bras fit better now because they don't dig in. I am so happy that I don't fit my old jeans. My husband is doing this with me and he looks great too.  Can you tell I am happy?

Like others have said...Please wear sunscreen. I do now. Didn't always and have some damage.

Keep up the good work kids! I figure it doesn't matter what you do, just as long as you do it!

TTFN, haz

Running will also make your uterus fall out and will take the blood from your brain, leaving you stupid and/or in a coma, or at least unable to bear children (if your uterus hasn't fallen out yet, that is.)

These comments are just as silly as the ones you've been fed. Sun damages skin; boobs and skin sag or wrinkle with age; your personal rate will vary with your genetics. Nothing can change this but good skin protection and good bras--NOT just while running, by the way--will help. Also, good bras keep those puppies up even when you are older, so don't freak.

FYI, I hate sunscreen so i run early or late and wear a hat. I'm almost never out during the sunniest hours of the day (9 to 5ish) unless I'm covered by cloth/hats. I've got some skin damage on my face from when I was young and stupid (and pretty much no one knew better) but I was always an early morning runner in those days, so it's less than it might have been.

and I wondered why my boobs have been sagging lately Laughing
