SELENE SAID: ""I'm eating about 1300 - 1600 (always aiming for 1500 but most times never reaching it) calories a day, and I'm working out 3 - 4 times a week. It would be 45 minutes on an ellipitical machine, 15 on a treadmill, and then light weightlifting that takes about 20 minutes. Should I upping my calories or am I aiming for a good place for once?""

How tall are you love? I am 5'11" if I ate 1300 I would turn pale fall over and die! haha. This looks like a good range for someone in or around 5'4" Maybe 5'6". Bigger organs need more food. Bigger bodies need bigger muscles, which need more food.

But, considering your workout is vigorous... I would recomend a Muscle milk, or protien drink after your work out. Perhaps a cup of Juice right before.

Also... Little known fact but cardio (particularly running) can Shake iron out of your red blood cells. No kidding. I used to be aniemic because of that! haha... So try to use the bike a bit in place of running and take your Multi-Vitamen.

Good thing I take iron and multi-vitamin pills, but not every day.  Iron supplements have too much iron, but I take them when I start to feel a bit low.  I am anemic.  And I'm just 5'1.  When I went to the doctor months ago, I was finally 61.25 inches. (I've been 60.25 inches since middle school.)  To be honest, my body stays full on 1000 if meals are spaced correctly and I get my 104oz of water before 5pm.  But I like to get in a protien shake right after a workout, whether it's more cardio or weight lifting.  I feel too hungry when sleeping if I don't and wake up in hunger pains.  But the protien enriched breads I might look into, wheat bread and veggie burgers leave me hungry way too quick afterwards.

And thanks Leo.  It finally feels better today, which is good since today is Professional Assistants day, so I'm being treated to lunch.  Luckily, everyone I know seems to be on some sort of diet, so they're okay with trying this new health place down the street from my house.

Hi all!  I'm back.  HA HA!  I was in the 180's club a year ago.  Never made it out of the 180's club and gave up.  Now, a year later..........well, trying a different approach this time.  Decided to diet AND exercise this time.  So far, 2.5 pounds in 10 days.  Maybe I'll continue in that direction (continuing at that pace would be nice, too, but I realize that probably isn't likely.)  Goal is 150 by my birthday at the end of August.

I started out at 199 several years ago.  Lost down to 171, and then slowly regained back to 188.  Pretty much have stayed there +/- 5lbs for the past year.  Couldn't seem to break 180, got frustrated, and gave up.

Anyway, wanted to say hi.

Selene,

Oh you are a wee little thing!  Ya what you are eating should be plenty... They don't really gadge calories very well for women below 5'3" or Above 5'8" (we are statisticaly rare) so if you find yourself eating a bit less but being comfortable and happy... you're problobly fine.

Welcome Morrow!  I have been stuck for awhile in the 80's myself.  I lost a bit, but gained it back.  I haven't been as dilligent as I should be.  It's pretty hard when my husband cooks dinner all the time and has no patience for the "diet thing" as he calls it.  I can't complain though.  How many women have their dinner cooked for them when they get home?  I just mainly try to do portion control.  I started working out on the Total Gym but now my shoulder is all messed up and I haven't been able to do that.  Plus I am a Psych nurse so I am just plain beat when I get home from work and don't really feel like doin crap!  Good luck to you on your journey!!!

Hi Morrow and Elizabeth!

^-^

Lilsmiter - Really tiny.  And fat.  >.<  I went on another site and it says I burn about 1600 calories a day, and here it say I burn 1900.  So I might want to try eating less and excerising a bit more?  I am finding myself more and more hungry as the days ago by.

I can not seem to shrug off 180 lb figure. I am stuck here. It is dampening my efforts as well to lose. I hate exercising though. I am just trying to lose by cutting claories any suggetions? Because if I exercise it is making me hungry and I end up eating more. Feels like I can not break the cycle.

Welcome back Morrow!

LadyLiz - At least your husband cooks!  That would make things awesome if my boyfriend cooked and I didn't.  I bet that you burn a lot of calories working as a nurse.  BTW... I'm a psych major.  Would it be good experience to get a job in the mental health field, even as a nurse, in the summers?

LillyS - Welcome in... I understand your struggles.  I plateaued at 180 and I just recently have left it.  I decided I wouldn't care about anything except getting enough fiber and protein in, and I started losing again.

I said a lot more than I planned to!  I was going to exclaim to the world that I am at 172.8!!!

Tnax Leopardine. That makes me feel better. I guess I will stop weighing myself constantly and stick to just once a week.

170.6 today =D

This may be a shot in the dark, but anyone know how many calories are in a 4 inch by 4 inch square of chunky chocolate brownie? On the package, it has the calories for the brownie unprepared XD.

I went hiking yesterday, and also walked more than I have in the past year, haha.

And congrats, leopardrayne! That's awesome!

Lilly - That's probably for the best.  Check once or twice a week, and don't peek in between!

Sharky - Very nice!  It's a great number.  As for brownies... That's a big brownie!  A 2 x 2 inch square of brownie is offered in Calorie Count.  I think you'd have to multiply it by 4, because it's (2x2)^2.  I hope it didn't mess up your goals too much today.

I haven't eaten the brownie yet (baking now, actually), and thank goodness- I just measured 4 by 4 inches and realized that that would be a monster brownie.

175.8 today. Kinda dissapointed in myself. I was 172.4 over the weekend, and I let it slip away. Pizza, cake and ice cream did me in at the office party.

Tomorrow's another day....And last night I did a work out at home that left my thighs aching today, so there's at least that! :D

Sharky~You could always split up the brownie into 4 pieces, and that way have 4 brownies that you can share with others, OR have 4 brownies to eat over 4 days!

Leo~ I'm so jealous! That's awesome that you're getting down there! Rock on!

I had a big steak at dinner that may have ruined my diet...

But I was happy to see 172.8, which is my lowest number.

169.8! I don't know how that happened in one day, but yay!

I survived the brownie yesterday. It was very good and apparently it did not hinder my weight loss.

How is everyone today?

183lbs! But more importantly, I lost almost 2 inches off my hips, waist, and bust.  And I might find a walking partner today.  ^_^

170.8 pounds... that's 27.2 pounds less than what I started.  I am grateful.  I'm going to lose so much more

I am happy.  I, on the other hand, have not lost quite so many inches.  You're lucky, Selene.
Nasuoni - I'm in the same boat.  I was 184.something on Friday morning.  As of this morning, I'm 186.8.  I think part of it is just the fact that it's the weekend - guilty of eating more while at home than during the week, so guess I need to get out more.  HA HA!  And, part because I turned my ankle last Thursday and haven't been walking that much the past few days.  Hopefully will be back on track next week.  It's always frustrating to see the numbers go up.
I've got to drink extra water tonight, because of two days in a row with more salt than usual.  Saturday was 4800, and Sunday was 2800... both are very high for me, as I usually get 2000 or less.

I'm sorry about your ankle, Morrow.
Selene... there is such a thing as trying too hard to loose weight. You can't punish yourself thin. Why don't you back down to burning fewer calories during your workouts.
173.2.  Not the best...

Selene - Lilsmiter is right.  I'm losing more weight by going to the gym three times a week than I was by going 5.  30 - 45 minutes of treadmill, weight lifting for as long as I feel like it (which never tends to be longer than an hour).

As for eating... the standard I've been going by is as follows:
  • Calories:  1350 - 1550, occasionally over 1600 to break a plateau.
  • Fat 25 - 40 g
  • Protein 65 - 90 g  (this one gets easier with time).
  • Carbohydrates 175 - 200 g.
  • Sodium 1800 - 2200 mg (this is the hardest to do, but it prevents you from retaining water and seeing an ugly number every morning).
  • Fiber 25 - 30 g
The rest of the stats don't bother me.  Selene, since you're about my age, I don't see how you won't see real results for it.  Saturdays I take my day off, but my day off is more like working "part time".  I still watch what I eat, but I allow something I crave.  This time it was ice cream and steak. :-P
