The "in our 50s group" ****GROUP OPEN****
Anybody out there in their 50s??
We seem to have a little harder time dropping our weight. Slower metabolism and less active I think. I'm looking for the 50s group to lose and share with. I KNOW you're out there!
Happy 2009! We can make this the best year yet!
Fancy55 posted at the same time I did. I admire your dedication, fancy, to stop smoking and lose weight at the same time. I'm proud of you and know you can do it. I hope the side effects of your meds stop soon but good for you for keeping on in spit of it. Healthy all around, that's our goal!
Thanks JCR!
I WILL BE A HEALTHY NON SMOKER! I WILL! (smile)
I won't see the 170's with you in June but I will see the 190's! When I hit that I will reward myself with my first new outfit...nothing great as I have tons more to lose...but new shorts and nice top maybe. If the shorts are dressy enough I can even wear them to work. (My office is pretty low key)
Well hubby is on his way home. Supper tonight is going to be easy...left over corn on the cob and a boca burger for me. (Hope I can eat it, I am hungry) And he is getting a chicken sandwich....

You are good 4 motivation fancy. I keep hearing about chantrix. First on another thread. Someone was kind enough to send me more info. I got on the internet and learned a little more. Please let me know how u do with it. I have only 1 thing that really shames me bsides my weight. And that is that I smoke. Only about 7-8 a day. But it is still smoking. The patch worked 4 me about a year ago. But I had 2 stop cause it made my heart race. If you could, would you see if there are any warnings about that. Also I have BCBS insurance. Do u know if that covers it? I'll call my DR. 2morrow.
My new scale is a WW one, purchased from Walmart too. It seems to b ok. Same as my Dr's. So that was good enough 4 me. It was just losing 4-6 weeks worth of progress that made me want 2 binge BIG TIME!!!
Back 2 smoking....I've wanted to quit 4 a long time. But the thought of gaining even more weight was 2 much 4 me. Thanks fancy. Best of luck 2 u. I hope your feeling like your old self real soon.
Guess what?? I'm so excited!!! I tried 2 order the Leg Magic lower body work out equipment from QVC on April 18th. Of course they were out and I waitlisted it. I just got an email that it shipped on Thursday. YAY! Have u seen it on infomercials. Gosh I hope it works. Supossed 2 focus on the thighs and tush!!!

Well, I did pretty well on the reunion food. Not heaping but I ate a few chips (lowfat) but I haven't done well with anything greasy or with oil and I guess those had enough to make me an involuntary bulimic! So, the reunion wasn't so hard on me after all but my stomach is killing me today. I had major acid reflux. I know I have GERD (It'll be nice to see if that disappears when I lose weight). But I have also heard that a problem with fried foods is a possible gall bladder problem. Oh, the pleasures of growing old. So my weight hadn't changed from all the reunion food. I think God was trying to send me a message!!! I have noticed that I have lost my taste for a lot of the high calorie, high fat foods I used to eat. So, that feels like success. This is a great group. This does keep me from late night snacking :0)
Munsey, Many insurances cover the Chantrix....I have great ins through my husband but on this particular drug I had what I consider a very high copay. $25.00 for the first 11 days and $40.00 for each 30 days thereafter up to 6 months. 6 months is all that you can have it. Side effects are nausea (which I have very bad), bloating (just a little), sleeplessness...I slept like a baby last night, wild dreams....none of those last night either, headaches, nope not me and I can't remember....oh yes...dry mouth...which I had some today due to the upset tummy and not wanting to eat or drink.
And if your scales weighed light it doesn't mean you wern't losing does it? It just means you wern't at the weight you thought you were...but if pounds came off...pounds came off....right? Or were you like me....weighed at WW and then used the scale at work all week to chart my progress....which in the end was 4 pounds or so that I thought I had lost but hadn't. I still lost weight though...just not as much as I thought I did (and 9 pounds plus would have been too much of a drop in a week anyway!)
I started a thread "CHANTRIX" and we have several "ex" smokers here that have used it with great results. Hope I become one of them.
bub55, I too am finding that my tastes are changing and my cravings are changing too. Now I seem to crave fruit, especially black berries. And fried foods really seem to bloat me and give me gas....so I stay away from most fried foods and if I do have them I pat them dry with a paper towell. (Several paper towells until no grease comes off on the towell) I too find that if I consume too much grease I am sick...not throwing up though...the other way!

wow...wish my tastes would permanently change! I went to McDonalds today (my son's treat out of huis paycheck) and had a whole meal....chicken club grilled, med fry and an apple pie for dsessert. I was so worried i blew it, but i came home and figured up all my exercise for the day thus far, and then started exercising a bunch, a few minutes at a time. I have over 600 claories deficit, so i guess i'm ok. boy oh boy did i enjoy that meal! sure not gonna make a habit of it, but i guess i needed to be "bad" like that today. my spirits are sure up, lol. of course, all the epinephrine released by my brain during the exercise likely contributed positively to my good mood, too. sure gonna sleep good tonight, LOL!
Caroljoy,
I have been craving a BIG MAC too......but only when I drive by a McDonalds. Funny....I rarely ever ate a BIG MAC in the first place!
We need to be bad once in a while. Sunday I had what we call around here a Jackson County Veal.......which is actually pork tenderloin pounded thin, breaded and fried and they are huge....plate size, served with a regular hamburger bun which of course doesn't cover even half of the sandwich. You can buy them already made or you can get them frozen to take home and make. I got the latter so I could at least fry in good oil. I ate the entire thing without the bun, an ear of corn and some baked beans. Wasn't sure how to figure the "veal" but I had only had 7 points with 14 points left for the day so I figure I was pretty close.

This post above seems to contradict my earlier post about cravings?.not necessarily so. I am finding myself craving more healthy things but every now and again I still that ?gotta have it? crave for something insanely bad for me. And usually it is a fried food like the ?veal?. I was horribly bloated Sunday evening?.but that veal was sooooo good!
Hi, I just read a little of the posts here. I have just turned 52 and you are right it is really hard to loose the weight now but really easy to put it on. As of today I will start reading this post, hopefully I can get some good advice from the group.
This week has not been a good one for me as like I said I just turned 52 and my husband bought me an ice cream cake and we are still eatting it.
What I do not understand is how the scales can go up 5 pounds just over night.

i understand your amazement at those sudden 5 lb climbs. i just wrote in my journal about that this morning:
you'd think i'd be used to these midweek spikes and climbs. *sigh* weird water retention, a bit of constipation, so many things can cause them...but at the end of the week they tend to settle down and the real loss shows. or it darn well better, anyway, LOL! lookin' forward to Friday for my official weigh in. i think it will be better.
i was layin' in bed the other night, lookin' at my tummy...boy does it look weird now! where it used to be all filled out with ugly firm fat, it's saggy and loose with lots of big stretch marks! who'd of thought one could find that a thing of beauty and delight! my hubby and i do! when i layed on my side, it sort of fell over like a soggy flat apple turnover, lol! lovin' it! 51 down, "just" 120 to go!

It helps me to be accountable with my food if I not only write in my WW book but also account here??.
So for breakfast:
1 pt Eng muffin with p. butter and all fruit for another 2 pts. (3)
Blackberries (1 c = 1 pt.) I had about ¾ c counting it as 1 pt
Mid morning snack cup decaf black with a WW muffin (3pts)
Lunch?.raw veggies 0 pts and 1 triangle of cheese 1 pt. (veggie dip is also 1 point) 2 pts.
Fresh fruit: cantaloupe, grapes, peach and strawberry (not sure of the points ? probably about 2 pts???????total lunch (4points).total so far for the day 10 points with 14 points left.

GOOD JOB FANCY!
WOW....if gas had weight, i'd be skinny by now! LOL! I eat so much fiber that i'm full of it! If this keeps up, i'll have to rename myself Mrs. Rumblebuns!

Carol...........lol!
caroljoy - at least at mcdonald's you ate a medium fry and a grilled chicken sandwich which is probably less than what you might have eaten before. A splurge now and then is a good thing if you do what you did and exercise more to make up for it. If I go into total denial of everything I like, I'll just go crazy and way overeat and blow it.
I get so ticked off about those sudden 5 lb climbs, too. Why does it take days to lose 2 pounds and you can gain it all back and more in one day of being bad? It does tend to even out over time, though. It must be water weight gain or bloating.
I was sick yesterday and only ate about 1000 calories and saw no weight loss. I guess I was in starvation mode which I know happens but just seems so foreign to me that you need to eat more calories!
About the saggy tummy - anyone know anyone who has had a tummy tuck after big weight loss? I thought I would reward myself with one after I lose a bunch of weight. I do have a slight phobia about going under the knife and not coming back and having to explain to God why I died from such a vain thing!!!!! But really, all that saggy skin we'll have when we get skinny could be a hazard by getting caught in zippers or car doors or something :0)

Yeah, I really don't relish the idea of looking like a sharpei when all is said and done. But my leg machine came in today, and I can't weight to set it up!!!! Maybe I can tighten the tush and hams a little
And I was ok til I read the words Big Mac!!!!! Thanks alot fancy. crave crave crave.....
Oh and I made a Drs. appt today to get a script for chantix. I hope this doesn't mean a divorce. What with the limited food intake. I could turn into a raging B_____!!!!
Are u feeling better today fancy?

Yep! Feel much better thanks. With the Chantix make sure you eat before you take it....I was hardly nauseated at all today! I ate my muffin and then took my meds then drank almost 20 oz water. Much better. And I have only smoked 5 cigs I think. Usually by now it would have been 3 times that many or more. And already they are tasting BAD! Tomorrow I start on the 2 pills a day for 4 days then it goes up to twice the doseage 2 times a day. I am thinking by the weekend I may be done if not before. They are not tasting good at all and now it is the habit kicking in and not the addiction. I have lit the same cig 3 times since I came home form work....it is time to just put them away and be done with it. You'll be able to do it Munsey, I know it! And unlike the other times I have tried I am no more a "B" with this than usual! LOL! (the last time I tried hubby offered to pack my things for me and I don't think he was kidding....and we have one of the best, loving relationships I know. I was more than a "B" and we almost separated over me trying to quit....)
Whats for supper (dinner) guys? I am thinking some stuffed talipa with brussel sprouts and a small baked potato and maybe a small salad. I ate so many raw veggies today that salad is not what I want but hubby asked for one. I planted lettuce in my little herb garden and it is ready to eat. Does any one else have a garden> small or large? I just have some tomatoes, bell peppers, a cucumber vine and herbs plus the lettuce. With the fibromyalgia that is about all I can handle anymore. I used to have huge gardens and can and freeze almost all our veggies. Next year hubby wants a salsa garden.....he loves salsa and wants to try making his own. Really we have everything he needs this year with the exception of hot peppers and onions (and our tomatoes are yellow instead of red!)

Hello and welcome to changling!!! Just saw your post. Yeah, we represent the slower but I like 2 think steadier group.
Thanks fancy 4 the encouraging words. I'm glad your feeling better.
I just noticed how I spelled wait in an earlier post (weight). Obssesion or what? I don't go 4 the perscription til the 18th, but I'm ready. There is not 1 good reason 2 smoke, and no matter the copay it's worth the price. I'm eager 2 hear of your progress!
It's just about mid-week, I'm hoping everyone is staying strong.
Caroljoy you always make me LOL. Lots of jiggling, extra calorie burn!!! Thank U!!!!

Welcome newcomers who found us..
munsey.. my sister-in-law is a Carole with an "E" also. She really likes her "E". I like to see my name S-u-s-a-n in writing. Call me Sue, Susan, Suzy, but if you write my name it has to be "Susan". Everyone has something, that is just one of my things.
Back to the weight jumping in a day..it drives me crazy. I can go up 4 lbs in a day. The more water I drink the better. And sometimes if I eat more in a day I go down. I am ususally not below 1500 I seem to be okay at 1700, it sounds a little high but I am in this for the long haul. So far it is working for me.
Good nite all - see you in the AM.

I add my welcome to changling. Glad you found us. Also glad your feeling better, fancy55, and that you're staying smoke free. Good luck to you, munsey, on your double journey of weight loss and giving up the cigs. I have great faith in both of you. Munsey, I loved it when you talked about not being able to weight until you set up your leg maching. LOL! What a great Freudian slip!
Well, I've just had a very "off" day on my eating plan. I have no idea how to count anything so I guess I'll just start again tomorrow. We had a big group breakfast at work. I tried to be good and ate one serving of the egg casserole, some fruit, yogurt and a muffin. Then went out to lunch and split a spinach salad but I don't think it was low fat dressing. Tonight was a retirement dinner for a colleague - salad, roll and butter (yep, I ate one and it was SO good!), chicken breast and mushrooms in sauce, tortellinis, mashed potatoes, green beans and almonds (in butter sauce, I fear). Also had some little individual desserts - kind of bite-size but they were very rich and decadent. That's more food than I usually eat in two days - but all 3 meals were social settings and just so hard to eat wisely. I hope I haven't done so much damage that will take all week to undo.
Is it OK to eat really, really light tomorrow to try to make up for some of the extra calories I had today? Or am I better off to be sure I stay at my 1200 + eating back exercise calories? Any advice?
