140s want to be 130s discussion/support group *ALWAYS OPEN*

Quote  |  Reply

taking a page from restless_girl's book, because i don't understand why groups have to be exclusive.

me, i've been kicking around in the 140s (both extremes and everywhere in between) for over a year now, and trying to get down to 135.  at my highest i was 167-ish; that was long ago.  but it seems that every time i knock at the door of 139, i get complacent and backslide (beer & chicken wings anyone?).

weigh-in if you want, or just commisserate and support.  i'll pop in periodically ;)

good morning ladies! My weight went from 139.6 yesterday to 136.8 this morning.. quite the difference! I was feeling quite skinny yesterday... so I'm happy.. hmm... maybe I can get to my 135 goal this week.... hmmm...

tonight I'm planning on weight lifting for 45-60 minutes. I'm debating breaking out the 25 lb weights for my upper body stuff... I wanted to go to 20 lbs first but I'm doing 12 reps of 15 lbs now so I may be able to push out 8 reps of 25.. I'll give it a shot :) I'm going to use 30 lbs for my lower body... 8 reps of each exercise. Tonight, I think, is back and biceps for me.. I can probably pump some 25's for that.. I'm going to be lifting while I watch biggest loser ;)

My b/f is a Marine and an Iraq Vet. so he will be out celebrating with his best friend, also a Marine. I told him to go out and have a good time, I'll be home getting stuff done and he's going to call me if (more like when) he needs a ride home :)

pg- nice job with the 4k! I agree with Lynn; lazy or not, ya done good!!! running in the snow sounds pleasant.. I really want to go on a hike this weekend in the snow. It's so beautiful :) That's awesome that you're making it a point to get your run in! I bet you feel so much better!!

vicki- that wine trip sounds like so much fun! I should have gone! lol! I had a really great blush wine from a winery up here in Geneva.. the Old Mill Winery? I was in the area for the grape jamboree last month.. the jamboree wasn't as fun as I was hoping, but we picked up some great wine! glad to see you're back into soccer and exercise! even better that DH is joining you! my b/f will be jogging with me when he gets new running shoes... the ones he has are what he wore in the Marines 6 years ago and they are absolutely beat!

lynn- I like watching too but couldn't tell you who's been voted off! haven't watched in a couple of weeks... that's a nice burn you got Sunday, good job!! and maintenance is never a bad thing :)

we are all doing really great!! keep up the fantastic work!!! :D

i also watch the biggest loser, but don't give it my full attention.  but...i think that really sensible woman got voted off last week.  the smart, 40-ish one who's there with her husband but on the opposite team.

yeah, i really just watch to see jillian do her scary-bitch-turned-compassionate-therapist thing.  i love me some jillian.

krrpt, i'm so impressed with your weight lifting!  i can lift a 20k bag of dog food from the cart into the back seat, but there's no way i could do more than two curls with 25lb weights.

you're all so hard-core with the exercise!  all i do is running (and walking the dog, of course), and i don't even do much of that.

those of you who run, do you run trails or roads?  i'm asking because i find that switching back and forth has really made a difference to my speed and endurance.  and i got these great new trail shoes a few weeks ago that are just so great; they're waterproof (goretex) salomon XA pro 3D ultra GTX trail shoes.  they're USELESS on asphalt, but in the mud - omg.  i love them.

pg- thanks :) I feel like a total bamf when I lift weights.. love it.. oh- I loathe running, so you're running is quite impressive to me at least! those shoes are pretty serious! I like salomon's footwear... oh, and JM scares me to death.. I'd cry if she was my pt... omg.. It sure is entertaining though!

and when I jog it's on backstreets and sidewalks through our quaint little neighborhood and vintage downtown area :) I would love to trailrun but I have to wait for my b/f to do that.. I am SO directionally challenged it isn't even funny.. We've been going to the same park for 3 years and I still wouldn't be able find my way out of there alone, in broad daylight, with a map... It's quite sad actually, lol.. one day I'll be trail-running though! :)

work is so time-consuming... lol.. I'd much rather be home sleeping.. I did take Friday off though so that is definitely something to look forward to!

Krrpt, If I don't lift weights twice a week. I feel like I didn't do anything good at all. Running and walking plus dancing is good and all. But damn it. Weights just feels so freaking good, and I love it. I bench press 60 pounds, not counting the bar, because I think the bar weights around 45 to 55 pounds it's self. One of the guys told me once how much the bar weighed.. That's how I started out at first. Just with the bar, and I felt he was cheating me.. I wanted some plates on that bar, and he said. I was just starting out again, and I should know the rules of weight training, and I do know the rules. Do you do any leg presses?

Pg, Weight lifting is a good thing, and I really love it. I think weight training is one of the great keys to weight loss.

lynn- that's awesome!! my b/f and I have been wanting to invest in a bar.. I lift with dumbells and a weight bench in my apartment; so no leg presses. For lower body I do dead lifts, squats, ballet squats and some other hard-to-explain leg move, all with weights. Has been 25 lbs but will probably bump it up to 30 lbs today :)

Here's a women's weight training link. I have 2 links.

GI jane pointed this one out to me.

www.stumptuous.com

www.Strength-Training-Women.com

I hope these links give you some tips.

thanks lynn! I have a weight lifting book for women that has really been helping.. I absolutely love my routine now but when I'm ready for a change I'll definitely check out those links!!

Do you have rules of weight lifting for women?

If you do.. Please tell me about it. I've been wondering about that book if you have it.

Hi everyone, I've been reading these posts for awhile now but thought I'd stick my head in and see if I can attempt to be in the group too.

First off, my background: Joined a gym in April, had a personal trainer since May (soooo addicting and kills my bank account but I just wouldn't push myself hard enough without someone standing over me, forcing me to work hard - I actually have triceps now!). I've just been kind of bumbling along on the workout road without any real goals or anything, just a general fitness shape-up. I was 135 when I started at the gym but that caught me post-relationship breakup and I wasn't doing much so I wasn't eating much. Now I've jumped up to around 145'ish since I am exercising more and in a much better place in my life. I am back to baking and of course I eat what I make and that is a killer. But I've decided that I need some goals so I wanted to come in here for some support and find people on the  same journey.

Goals: By my birthday, late January, I want to have more defined shoulders and triceps (you can see them when I move my arms but when I am just relaxed there is no definition. I want to be one of those girls you see who has gorgeously toned upper arms and you are like "wow that is awesome" LOL!). I also want to be able to do a pull-up. I was so mistaken when I thought I could do one at the gym. I figure I have just over 2 months to do both of these and I think that is pretty reasonable. Oh, and get back to my fighting weight in the 130's.

krrpt: I am soooo envious of you lifting that much!! You go girl! I wanna be like you ;)

pg: I run, but nothing like you! I can't even imagine how different trail running is from regular pavement (which is what I do). Unfortunately, for me anyways, it's too easy to get stuck in a rut when running on the street because I get so used to having mental notes of when I start and stop that it's like my body knows exactly where I finish running and then that's it. Still trying to work on shutting my brain off there!

Good luck everyone on their week!

welcome karen!  yay - new blood!

sounds like you're another of these hard-core gym rats.  boo!  no, not boo.  i want the defined arms, too, i'm just not doing anything about it (triceps are the ones in the back, right?).

i'm not really much of a runner.  i like the trails for lots of reasons: first, i can let the dog off leash; second, when i'm thinking about where to put my feet (so i don't mangle myself), i forget what a **** runner i am; third, i've rediscovered the childhood joy of mud; fourth (and most important), when i run trails, i don't feel obligated to run very far ;)

btw, my running buddy tiggens hasn't been back since we made our every-second-day pact, so if anyone wants to step into her place - yay!

good morning! well... weight lifting wasn't as huge of a success as I was hoping.. I used the 25 lb weights for my back exercises, but I couldn't even do one bicep curl with those things! not one! lol! so I said, forget it, and I'll wait to increase till I get 20's... I did stick with my 15's for the biceps. I also bumped up my leg stuff to 30 lb weights. I did really well with that and could probably use heavier weights but I'll wait a little longer to do that... I thought I got a good workout in but I'm not as sore as I was hoping so I suppose that's another sign it's time to increase the weights.. ah well... soon!

Who watched TBL last night? I was happy with the voting process :) anyone else?!

lynn- I don't have that book but I do have "The Bodysculpting Bible for Women". I really like the book. 75% of it is pictures and explanations for workouts and even has a DVD so you see how to execute the moves. The explanations are so good though, that I haven't even looked at the DVD. 10% of the book is informational about diet and weight loss and all that. And the last 15% is the workout plan; it gives you multiple 6-week plans. There are 3 different plans and each plan has 12-18 weeks of workouts. But I really liked it b/c the workouts are not only gym-based. They show a lot of stuff I can do at home and even one program is geared towards the home-gym rat ;) I kind of veared off their plans but I used all of the workouts they suggested in my routines... maybe once I get to my goal weight I will use their routine for sculpting :)

welcome karen! I'm totaly with you on wanting to show muscles when I'm not trying! I saw a woman like that in Kohl's a few years ago and I couldn't stop looking at her! She didn't look masculine or anything.. just a nice, toned shape... I've been weight lifting since! lol! one day I'll have that shape ;) I started out with 10-lb weights and have gone from there. I've needed to get 20-lb weights for like a year but I don't want to spend the money.. bad excuse.. I know... now I really need them though! you can so do this!! :D

pg- not sure where tiggens ran off too (no pun intended) but I can't take her place :( I really dislike running that much! it's sad... I know... lol..

well ladies.. I have to work.. gotta get coffee first. then work :)

talk to you all soon!!

Welcome Karen, Nice to meet you.

Krrpt, I did one hell of a workout this morning. This list goes on and on, but I put 45 mins of weight training in at the gym, and 30 mins on the stair climb at the end. A girl on here has these great legs, and I had to ask her what she was doing to get those great legs. She said..... Stair Climb machine at the gym, and I had to try it. I love it.

I did watch TBL last night, and I was so proud Stacy. She did a great job, and they way the vote off went. To see a blue team member with a heart made me think. What are they going to do to her next week? I hope they don't treat her like crap, but I did like the way it all played out. It was a joy to watch.

Pg- Do you run everyday? Well if you do. You keep on running, because you look great.

You all have a nice day.

Hello Ladies!

I didn't realize there was another 140/130 club!

Stacey:  Glad to see you posting here and thanks for your note in my journal.  Yeah I'm struggling but I'm trying to work my way through it.  My younger daughter, and possibly my older one too, is going to meet me at the gym tonight so I can see how she's progressed since I set her up with a lifting program a few months ago.  Hopefully this will get me restarted on lifting.

I don't know the rest of you ladies, yet, so I'll fill you in on me...

I've been lifting since 2 years before dirt was invented!  I believe building muscle is the most efficient way to burn fat.  Jan 07 I was up to 178 Lbs after a serious back injury....April 08 I was down to 123 of lean defined muscle.  I lift heavy and love it...

Unfortunately I moved from living alone in a beautiful, brand new house in NC back to NJ to be near my family and have found the adjustment of living with my 87 y/o father a bit more stressful than I ever imagined.  Hence I began emotional eating again.  As of 11/2 I was back up to 154 but  was back down to 142 by 11/9....I blew it again this week and I'm refusing to get on the scale.

I haven't been to the gym except for last week when all I did was the cardio trainer and elliptical...no lifting...I'm struggling with stress and emotional eating like I haven't done since I blew out my back.  None of my clothes fit me and I gave away all of my fat clothes last year determined that I would never put the wgt back on...Yet here I am.

So, I'm hoping you'll let me join you group and maybe help me get back on track...Please feel free to pick my brain on lifting tips!

thanks, lynn!  i don't run every day.  i need recovery days.  i'm trying to stick to every second day, but i'm not sure i can even keep that up.  but on days when i don't run, i try to walk/hike a minimum of 45-60 minutes.

hi jem!  welcome ;)

i'm pg (maria in my real life) and i'm a 40-year-old grad student with a dog.  i rarely lift (well, when i'm really bored and procrastinating, i might play with my 8-pounders for a few minutes), but i'm making a good effort at becoming a runner.  my highest weight was 168, but that's almost three years ago.  i've lost extremely slowly.  got down to 138 a little over a year ago, but wasn't fit at all.  since i got the dog on feb 29, i've gone from almost completely sedentary to quite active, and it feels great.  i've been hovering in the 142-145 range for weeks now, after jumping back up to 150 in august-september.  trying to get to 135....

good to meet you!

pg, I do the 5k run  2 times a week, and I clear it in 41 to 45 mins sometimes. It's hard work. But I love running, and I had to get back into it. When a group was started for the 5k run on here. Everyone made it sound so hard. It was easy, but that's just me. Everything isn't easy, but those pod cast you can download on your ipod was a good tool to use during my runs. It was like a coach in my ear. I like rocky 5 sound track, and I down loaded that into my ipod as well, and my kids was like. This isn't good music.. What is this... Eye of the tiger really gets me moving.

Hi Jem! Nice to meet you.

hi joan!! I'm so happy to hear from you! That is great that you set your daughter up with a routine. Is it possible for you guys to meet up and workout together more than just tonight? That would probably be some pretty good motivation and you'd get to see your daughter! bonus!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

pg ~ Gym rat? Hhahaa the only reason I am at the gym is because of personal trainer guy. Otherwise, I can totally see why people get memberships and then stop going! There are just too many excuses. On my days off from trainer guy I usually just run here at home and then attempt to do some kind of ab work and weights/squats etc but even that is tough to get motivated on. I am hoping this whole goal thing will help me out more. Oh and yes, the triceps are in the back. It's pretty awesome when you can flex and they pop out.

krrr ~ Ok I am glad I am not the only one that sees totally fit women and wants to be like them, lol. I see one or two occasionally at the gym and I am amazed. There was one time that personal trainer guy and I just stopped and were staring at this girl next to us...absolutely gorgeously toned and shaped body. No fair! :) That'll be us one day, right?

I am going to weigh myself at the gym today and see what it says. I don't have a scale at home and I like the one there...it uses the bar weights that you move so it really can't lie. Plus it keeps me from being obsessive about weighing myself all the time, lol.

Have a great day everyone!

popping in quickly, to say hi.

Stacey - come on join us at the wineries.  It is a good time and you get to try all the Ohio wines.  I think there is another in December for the whole state you just pick which trail you want to do.  Someone asked - my favorite wine is Reisling, not to sweet or dry.

Weight has dropped a bit finally, back to working out and watching what I eat.  I feel so much better physically now that I am back on track.   I felt tired and out of sorts for a while now.  Just had to push myself and find time.  I have been working 60 hours weeks for the last 4 week and getting stressed.

I had a trainer one time, but it got so expensive.  I just need to remember what she told me and focus!!!!!

talk later, gotta run to soccer!

Ughhhhhhh I am back from my personal training day at the gym. I feel so exhausted and run-down after it, hate it when I am this way. Usually after a workout with trainer boy I am tired but feel strong but I HATE Wednesdays. They are Hill days - yes it deserves to be capitalized! - which means I sprint up rather steep hills while he stands at the top and yells at me to go faster. He always mixes it up so today was: (after warmups) 20 push ups (not girl ones), 20 squats, 20 jump lunges and 20 sit ups. Then sprint to the top of the hill and run back down. My first run was 58 seconds so he takes that and tells me it has to be under 58 seconds every time. Back to the 20 of each exercise then more sprinting. I seriously thought I was gonna puke after the last few. I hate sprinting! lol Now I am just dragging, I think I may need to re-think my diet or something as well.

I am off to celebrate an engagement between two of my good friends, I get to be the third wheel, woohoo! Undecided

good morning! my weight is still stuck at 136.4 but seeing as how I've gotten very little exercise this week, I'm not going to complain :)

karen- THAT WILL BE US!! :D how often do you lift? I'm doing 3 days a week right now.. I'd love to get more cardio too b/c I only do cardio 2 days a week but I don't really have time... that workout sounds pretty killer... I have a serious sledding hill by my apartment so maybe I should try your workout.. It sounds awesome!! how many times did you run up the hill?

vicki- once I get out of school I hope to do trips like that :) That would be so nice! now my free time (ha) is dedicated to homework... I really like reisling also.. I think I'm going to buy some this weekend :) that sucks that you are so stressed at work; hopefully working out again will help relieve some of that!

well.. I gotta get to work.. so I will talk to you all soon! keep up the great work!
