is it safe to lose 12 pounds in a week?
Not without medical supervision, although I can't imagine a scenario in which that would actually be healthy or recommended.
Not to mention that it's not going to be fat, but more likely water weight.
It really kind of depends on the weight you started out at. If it was a higher weight, then, as long as you're keeping your intake at a reasonable number, it's not surprising. Much of the initial drop would be water weight and is not unusual.
If you were at a reasonable BMI to begin with then no, it's not normal and I would likely say to start eating again. Somthing like 5-6 pounds of water retention would be more in the ballpark of a normal BMI range going from "normal" eating to healthy eating. Without your stats though, including age, height, weight, activity levels, and what you were eating before as opposed to now, that's about as specific as I can get.
Is it safe to lose 12 pounds in a week?
Maybe ....
(1) are you an adult?
(2) Is your BMI over 45?
(3) Are you eating at least 1200 calories per day?
(4) Is your calorie deficit limited to 1000 calories per day?
(5) Are you being monitored by a physician at least every other week?
If you can answer YES to all five of these questions, then losing 12 pounds per week MAY be safe. (Can you answer YES to all of these questions?)

=^..^= MOLLY
MollyMouser is giving you great advice. One other perspective is that you need to realize that it's your heart that is the main mechanism that is burning those calories for you. So when your body is burning that many calories it's like having your can engine running at 6,000 rpms for a week. If your heart is not in shape to begin with, that's a lot to expect your heart to do.
If you're not sure what running your care engine at 6,000 rpms feels like, the next time you're at a stop light and you're the first in line, floor it when the light turns green. (but don't speed, of course) You should get up to 6,000 rpms. And you should know right away that you car wasn't happy about it unless you have a high performance vehicle.
It's perfectly okay if you've just started. I see that you joined the site on 1/2, which makes me think that you started just a week ago. I took a week off over Christmas and drank alcohol while eating salty and sugary foods. Over that week I put on 11 lbs, and in the week since I've dropped 10 lbs. NOT OF FAT, that would be impossible, just water weight that was retained due to the alcohol, salt and sugar.
If you have done the same as me, then 12 lbs in a week was not fat, just water weight and it's perfectly okay. Just make sure you are getting plenty of water and not dehydrating yourself.
