Is it safe to lose weight in the first trimester of pregnancy?
Asked by janabanana06 on Sep 03, 2008 in Family & Pregnancy

Answer

Do not attempt to lose weight during pregnancy unless you are extremely obese and your doctor advises it. You don’t have to gain weight during the first trimester (13 weeks) but it's important to have a diet full of vitamins and minerals for the baby to develop.  During the second and third trimesters (26 weeks total), expect to gain 0.8 – 1 lb per week. To avoid excessive weight gain, get regular cardio-type exercise during pregnancy, such as walking and bicycling.  Increase your usual calorie intake by 300 calories a day.  Read more about your nutritional needs at My Pyramid for Pregnancy.
