Is it safe to take whey proten supplements when pregnant?
Hi, I am about 6 weeks pregnant. I eat mostly vegetarian food, so I have trouble getting in a decent amount of protein. I read in What to Expect When You are Expecting that protein supplements are dangerous- does anyone have any info on this?
Any help much appreciated!
I'm guessing that too much protein might be unhealthy for a pregnant woman. Or that supplents that have a lot of extras in them might be unhealthy.
But I can't imagine that a 100% whey protein powder would be dangerous, especially if you are not getting enough protein. It's basically just one of the proteins found in milk. Of course that's assuming you are okay with dairy. Of course if you are, I've heard chocolate milk can be just as good for you and also contains a lot of protein.
Of course, I am not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV), so I would say if you are concerned about it talk to your health care professional -- OB/mid-wife. I'm sure they would give you good advice.
You should always consult your doctor/midwife before taking any type of supplement.
I think whey protein powder is probably fine. I think the only reason it wouldn't be okay is if it were full of other herbal supplements as well. There are some certain types of herbs that cannot be taken during pregnancy.
