I was surprised to see that canned salmon has such a bad rating. I thought the calcium content et al would make it a good choice. I use very little salad dressing.
It's probably just the sodium in it since it's canned. It doesn't rate a food on how healthy it is, it just looks for a balance of numbers. You really shouldn't take the grading too seriously, it can be way off sometimes.
I wouldn't go by the rating system on this website because it's too broad... salmon is perfectly healthy and should be eaten two or more times a week - I eat it every single day!! Don't worry about the grade it go on the website - instead enjoy it! I love canned salmon with olive oil, diced bell peppers, olives, artichoke hearts & hard boiled eggs!! Mmmm!
The fresh salmon is rated A or B, the canned stuff usually is to salty or to fat so it has a bad rating.
Salmon is excellent for you. The canned salmon contains sodium and I am guessing that is why it receives a B rating. I use a strainer and put the salmon in the strainer and then rinse it well. It removes some of the sodium. Eat your salmon ![]()
If you can buy fresh it is better but canned is fine too.
Sorry, I don't see a D rating for the canned salmon. I used the search engine and put in just Salmon, and got this list
http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/search2.php? search_type=foods&searchpro=salmon&x= 12&y=19
except for the Bumblebee red salmon which gets a D+ for high cholesterol, they all get a B or C+. You just need to pick a different canned salmon.
Also, if you don't think the grade is correct, you can report it by clicking on "report bad grade" right under the large grade letter.
Thanks for all the advice and comments everyone. I think I will continue to enjoy the canned salmon in moderation!
