Ok so I've realized I put salsa on pretty much EVERYTHING!!!!!!

I make a plate of broccoli...what goes on top??

SALSA

I make a salad...what goes on top??

SALSA!

I make chicken...what goes on top??

I THINK WE ALL KNOW! =P

SADLY I was thinking, hey...it's salsa it must be totally good for you!  And while the veggies are, I didn't realize how much sodium there was in that stuff!!  No wonder I feel so bloated and blah afterwards!!

What salsa do you guys use?  Any with very little sodium out there?

No, most salsas use a lot of salt, so unless you make it at home, you will be hard pressed to find one with low sodium.

I myself looooooveee green tomatillo/japapeno or serrano salsa, however, I limit it to about one tablespoon per whatever because of the sodium and because it is very very HOT.

If you have the time to make it, there are lots of recipes online.

okay this is the second post of yours i'm replying to today, so i sort of feel like we're in the same room or something.  it's a bit eerie.

however, salsa:  i never liked salsa.  yuck.  until...i had fresh salsa that a friend made.  wow, was that great.  so for you i'd suggest home-making salsa.  you can control the sodium.  (but just for the record, i eat a ton of sodium and never feel bloated.  i really don't experience that whole sodium-is-bad theory at all.)

here's one by emeril lagasse, http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recip e/0,,FOOD_9936_31577,00.html (if the corn freaks you out, half the amount or cut it out)

this is from paula dean's show, but it's from a guest and uses canned tomatoes, http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recip e/0,,FOOD_9936_34308,00.html

good luck and good lycopene to you!

Haha thank you!

I now HATE salsa out of a jar!  My husband made some fresh salsa for me and I won't go back to the jar.

Here's my recipe (we have a big family, so it makes a lot, but I could eat it all in like 3 days!!!)

1 white onion

6 lbs tomatoes

6 lemons

6 limes

2 bunches cilantro

2 anaheim peppers

jalapenos (optional)

How to Make it:

Finely chop or food-process onion.  Put in NON-plastic bowl.

Squeeze all lemons.  Add to onions.  (the onions and lemon juice make a reaction, so don't add anything else yet.  Make sure to let set 15 min m/l while getting everything else ready.)

Chop tomatoes, cilantro, and peppers.

Squeeze limes.

Add everything together.  You can add salt to taste, if you want.  You can eat it now, or wait a couple hours and let the juices mix even more.  It's great!

I cashiered once at a trade show for a food processor thingy, the salsa the sales guy made with it was so good. I can't remember the name of the tomato, its smaller than the big round ones and oval shaped, he used them because they were more 'meaty' and less stuff inside (so the salsa isnt too sloppy). Then he put in some cilantro, white onion, bit of jalapeño, bit of garlic (maybe some lemon/lime, don't remember) and chopped it all up in the thingy. I'm not a fan of the chunks in jarred salsa but I really liked this one, he chopped it finely enough.

It's probably a Vitamix blender....  They are always at Tradeshows.  My husband wanted one SOOOO bad, so we finally broke down and bought it.  They are rediculously expensive.  I use it every day for my protein shakes, but I don't like it with salsa...

The smaller tomatoes are roma tomatoes.  I use whatever is the cheapest and looks good.  It can get expensive because tomatoes are so expensive, so the cheaper ones work.  You just have to look because sometimes the roma ones are more, sometimes their less than regular slicing tomatoes.

Thank you everyone I'll be sure to try those =)

We have a magic bullet thing...I wonder if that would work...?
two magical words: WHOLE FOODS. they have the best salsa ever. ever ever ever. oh my god. and i think it's pretty damn low in sodium. it's the fresh salsa that you buy chilled...i don't know if it has some other brand name, but it's not the kind that comes in a glass jar or can. it's GOOD.
