salt allergy anyone??

Quote  |  Reply
lately i've noticed a bump on the underside of my tongue. it doesn't hurt though. some days it is HUGE and some days it is completely deflated and going away.

well... just now (.... ok, i'll admit it...) i had some tostitos scoops. just one serving though! and afterwards, the sides of my lips were swollen and that bumb went from deflated to swollen up again.

is that from salt content? has one heard of a reaction like this?

If you already had a small cut, the salt could irritate it, just like with salt on any wound.

With this time of year, I don't know about you, but I get a lot of irritation on my lips and mouth due to the weather.  Do you think that could be happening to you?
well, it isn't a cut on my tongue.... it's definitely a bumb. i don't think it's open. lol. i have no idea about that one.

my lips do get chapped from weather but i don't think that is what it is. after i ate the chips the corners of them got swollen immediately! like within a 2 or 3 minutes...
Sometimes mouth itchiness or swelling could be an allergy, you should really see your doctor cause allergies could suddenly go from irritating to life threatening in no time!

Don't think it's an allergy to salt though...

Have your dentist take a look at it.  Does this happen every time you eat salty food?  Or is it maybe one of the other ingredients.

I'm with claire. There's salt in lots of things, I think you would have noticed it when eating other things not just the tostitos. It does sound like an allergic reaction but might be to the corn.

and I'd ask my dentist or my doc about that bump! like now! do you smoke or chew tobacco??

It's very hard to be allergic to salt, since it is a needed chemical in the body...some people are allergic to boxed salt, because it has iodine in it.  You may be sensitive to a preservative or something else in the Tostitos.

The baked Tostitos are very good, and if you watch your portion size and eat them with a good salsa, they are actually pretty good for you.
What ravenlark said, and, like, NOW, and no Tostitos for you in the meantime. (I'm completely serious.)

I can be sensitive to salt, and sometimes will get chapped lips from eating something that is high in sodium. This is NOT an allergy; it's simply a dehydration reaction to the salt.
thanks for your input guys. no, i don't smoke or chew. i haven't had any tostitos since and it isn't as big and swollen, but the bump on my tongue is still there. i'm going to talk to my doc about it tomorrow when i go for my hemangioma checkup! great fun!

Hi.  I get the same reaction to salt during the fall and winter months.  Right now my lips are red and swollen because I ate crackers last night with salt on it.  I know its from the salt, because I ate chips a few days ago, when it started.   At least you know you're  not alone-and not crazy.

I agree with ssutton6, it's very unlikely that you are allergic to salt, because salt is a chemical your body requires, and it is a simple molecule.

An iodine allergy is possible, although I think you would experience more than just a swollen spot on your tongue.

I wouldn't try to diagnose that myself. Probably best to talk to your doctor. It may be a cyst or just a sore that the salt irritates.
