What salt REALLY does to your body...

Quote  |  Reply

I usually have a very small amount of sodium in my diet - I aim for 1500mg, or 50% of the RDI, and generally get fairly close... yesterday I hugely miscalculated and had 148% of my sodium - 3555mg.

The 'healthy' chefs salad I made for dinner last night contained one and a half eggs, one ounce of Dietz and Watson turkey, one ounce of Virginia ham, one ounce of string cheese, 2 tablespoons of Light balsamic salad dressing, and six dill pickle slices - and a staggering 75% of my RDI for sodium!

This morning when I stepped on the scale my weight had increased by a pound and a half overnight! I know it's not 'real' weight and it'll go away again soon, but it's a clear demonstration. So if every ounce matters to you, WATCH YOUR SALT INTAKE!

hey kajikit, make sure you drink loads of water today (even more than your usual) and you will see that pound disappear hopefully tomorrow :)

I was absolutely SHOCKED the first time I read the label on a jar of pickles and saw how much sodium is in ONE little pickle.  How easy is it to sit down and eat 4 pickles? But that would be all the sodium you can stand in a day!

I definitely see it on the scale when I go overboard on the sodium, but at least its comforting to know that its only retained water and you can take it back off relatively easily.

I was just wondering this morning what the big deal about sodium is.   I've usually ignored my sodium intake because I din't think I was taking in much; I never use salt.  It amazes me to see how much sodium is in ordinary things.
Our bodies actually need salt and yes many foods have salt, and not just the processed ones.  If you do over do the salt drink plenty of water this will help dilute the salt and allow the body to flush out the excess. On the same token becareful of how much water you take in with out enough salts, aka electrolytes.  If you know you are drinking enough water and are still feeling thirsty you need more salts, not just table salt.
i'm always over  :(  and i love pickles!  i get about 200% everyday...  i wish i could stop doing that, but at least i don't salt my food
