Salt Recommendation

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone actually know the recommended daily intake of salt in g/sodium in mg for people in the UK? I'm sure it is different for people in the UK and that we have a much lower allowance than other countries. Help!

Thank you for that, puts my mind at ease! :)

I think it's the same in the US.

Holy cow, that's a lot of salt.  Shoot for 1000mg or less of sodium

there's no need to restrict sodium that low, mikelane.  Even people with extreme high blood pressure can have 1500 safely.  And you do need some salt to keep your body working on a cellular level, especially if you exercise or if it's hot weather.

I stay under 1500 and that works really well for me.  Too much sodium and I feel awful and all bloaty and it takes daysss for it to go!

Mine was around the 1900mg mark today, sometimes its way lower and some days it's probably a little higher. I never tend to have a problem with bloating, even if I've had a lot of bread and that type of stuff. I must admit salt is one of the things I check for a lot on lables though, something high in salt would put me off eating it even more than something higher in calories. I never ever use salt in cooking and dont add it at the table.

It's kinda funny it went to 1900 today, as the majority of what I ate today was fruit or veg, I bet it was that spaghetti and toast I had at breakfast that did it!!

As long as I'm not going over the limit though I guess I'm ok :)

You're fine... 6g is the recommended maximum.  Most adults in the UK go over 10g and that's fairly dangerous long-term if happening in conjunction with other risk-factors e.g. being overweight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels.  My food log always registers below 1200mg because I eat zero processed foods.  However I know I add a pinch of salt here and there in the cooking so I expect it's more realistically <2000mg.
