Too much salt -- can you work it off?
So the analysis of my diet here on Calorie Count shows that I consistently have too much salt (over 100% of the RDA, sometimes up to 150%).
I know that's a problem that can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure). My question: if you exercise a lot and otherwise eat very healthy, will that negate the effects of too much salt when it comes to hypertension? Does anyone know (I'm looking for solid info, not guesses or hearsay)?
Thanks. I'm pretty healthy, and both my kidneys work ... well, as far as I know. I'm sure I'd feel it if one stopped working. :)
I guess I should get my blood pressure checked. Haven't done that in well over a decade. I know, I know. Not smart.
Hypertension runs in my family so I am mindful. If I'm in Walmart, I usually check my own blood pressure in the quick little machine they have in front of the pharmacy.
Here's how I curb salt: 1) Drink lots of water, 2) eat lots of grains, fresh fruit and vegies that I prepare myself (breakfast is old fashioned oatmeal and lunch is a big salad with lots of fresh veggies and grilled chicken breast with a measured amount of dressing -that's where the salt is) 3) sweat! When I do a hard workout, I can literally scrape the caked salt off my skin.
So far, at 46, I'm the only one in my family who doesn't have hypertension. Mom, dad, and sibs all have to take medication.
Hope this helps!
Pat

Meanwhile, drink plenty of water to flush that salt out!
