Sandwiches

Quote  |  Reply

Lately I've been eating a lot of sandwiches and I like them, they are very convenient and healthy I think!

I usually use:
-2 slices of whole grain bread
-2 thin pieces of proscuitto ham (its very salty and high in taste, so I don't need that much of it!
(or several slices of turkey breast)
-avocados
-whatever veggie I have on hand - usually sprouts or mushrooms.

I would like to use tomato, but it makes the bread soggy if I pack it for lunch... and also, what do I do with the rest of the tomato!

I usually just toast the bread in the morning, let it cool and than put toppings on --> wrap everything in foil and take it with me for lunch.
Are there any better options?

What other healthy things do you put in/on your sandwiches??

It seems like a nice healthy balanced lunch to me, what do you think? I got my protein, whole grains carbs, veggies, healthy fats.

I make mine with either: tuna, onion, green salad, tomatoes or red beans; low-fat cow-milk cheese, green salad, olives, green pepper; salmon, egg, green salad, onion; goat-milk or blue cheese, walnuts or pecans, arugula. I use cherry tomatoes and eat them on the side instead of slicing a big tomato, I also like their taste better.

I'm not a big fan of putting fruit on sandwiches like some people like to do, I eat them in whole pieces instead, so I'm not very creative Frown

If you like tomato on your sandwhich.  Take it with you in seperate container along with your lettuce, sprouts, etc.  Add to sandwhich at lunch time.

You could also pack cherry tomatoes separately and just eat them as a side.  I like cucumber on my sandwiches.  They provide a nice crunch and very few calories.  Be sure to leave the skin on to get more vitamins.

yep, i agree with jeanettar's post.  If you are pressed for time just take a tomato and sharp knife and cut it up when you want to eat the sandwich.  Another trick is put put lots of (unshredded) lettuce on the top and bottom of the sammich and kind of 'nest' the other ingredients in the lettuce, which stops it soaking through to the bread.

I love realy loaded sandwiches with some sort of meat, lettuce, tomato, gherkin/pickles, beetroot, tomato, cheese, hummus, sprouts, anything really.  (but i really think the pickles and beetroot make it extra tasty!!!)

Wow! That's the same exact sandwich I eat for lunch almost everyday!

Well, except that I always eat turkey, because my school doesn't have prosciutto. Or I just don't eat any turkey. (It can get really boring.)

Another sandwich you might want to try is almost like a salad: lettuce, walnuts and apple slices on marbled rye.

I like to have a glass of skim milk and a pear/apple on the side. And apples are especially good right now, with the fall and all. :D

Have you tried plum tomatoes?  They're also called roma tomatoes, they have a lot less juicy slimy stuff in them, and one tomato is usually the perfect amount for a sandwich. :)

My sandwiches are usually something like...

2 slices of whole grain commercial toast, or a chunk of homemade stuff with a hole carved in the middle, lol; 1 roma tomato; a few Datil Dew all natural local pickles (no HFCS or yellow #5! Surprised); 1 tsp dijon mustard; a few leaves of romaine....

Onion and mushrooms quickly sauted in a 1/2 tsp of olive oil, then in the same pan (+ a lid) some breifly cooked bell peppers on 2 slices of toasted bread....

Open-faced peanut butter and jelly....

Peanut butter and banana on toast...

I love sandwiches. :D

One thing you can do is remove the seeds from the tomato and roma is also a good choice.  I always seed my tomatoes when i add them to a recipe it works well.

I am not a sandwich person, some of your ideas sound good!

I eat this daily and have a pic up in my gallery.   With a side order or radishes and celery. It is good isn't it.

I pack lunch everyday. I put my lettuce, tomato and peppers in a separate baggie and put it on my sandwich right before I eat it. I cut up the extra tomato an put it in my cottage cheese.

I love pitas and wraps, Tuna, salmon, chicken, turkey, Boca burgers, peanut butter and banana, egg beaters, hot peppers and black, pinto or navy beans.

I like bell peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, light mayo, sometimes cheese and pickles. The only lunch meat I can find here is ham, which I loathe, so I stick to veggie sandwiches. When avocados aren't $3+ each, I'll buy one and put some on my sandwich.

I recently got a Saturday job in a fresh sandwich shop that makes a variety of sandwiches to order. The most popular orders we have are often brie, cranberry and rocket (bacon optional); salmon and low-fat cream cheese with green leaves; the traditional ham and cheese toastie with tomatoes; and tuna, salad and egg. All with a variety of breads: wholegrain baguettes and loaves as well as white. Have to have the option there! With those fillings I listed above you could easily make them healthier: turkey or vegetarian rashers, half-fat dairy where it's listed, non-processed ham, hard boiled egg...

We also get a lot of bacon butties, but, ah, you asked for healthier choices... XD

Cook about 1 serving of plain oatmeal, right before it's done add some cheese. I like horseradish cheddar. Mix it all together, put it in to a small bowl so it will have a shape of a "pattie" and put it in a fridge. In the morning take it out and use it with a bagel to make a "sandwitch". I like the Western Bagels Perfect 10 ones. Very tasty, and if you choose right bagel nutritional.

My favorite sandwich is really simple, and I pack it everyday for lunch and never get bored.

  • oroweat whole grain bread
  • two slices of deli sliced roasted turkey
  • two tomato slices
  • and iceberg lettuce

Sometimes I add swiss cheese too.

Mix a 6 oz can of tuna, drained (water or oil, whichever you prefer) with some dijonnaise, chives and celery.  I also like to add pepper.

Splatter onto some whole wheat toast.

:D

hummus is really good on sandwiches made on rye bread
