Sardines
I used the Mediterranean style sardines and drained all the oil. I chopped up some green onion, added the juice from a whole lime, a couple tablespoons of light mayo, salt, pepper to taste, chopped celery, and wrapped it in lettuce leafs. I know it sounds a little weird, but it was really good i swear. The lime cuts a lot of the fishy taste. I almost added capers then chickened out.
It's really healthy and loaded with omega 3's, and vit D cause you are eating the bones. The tin said that just the sardines drained had 150cal, so when you add it all up, not too bad for a 220cal snack.
best way to have them, IMO, fresh sardines (gutted) grilled outside. that's it. nothing else. maybe a nice chunk of bread too :-)
I think i've only ever tried them once in a can. too oily and salty for me, at least the ones i tried. fresh is awesome. though your grill/backyard will smell like sardines for awhile. not necessarily a bad thing :-)
Hey there-
I was looking at some recipes or different ways to eat sardines. Your recipe sounds good!! I am definitely going to try it!! I just usually eat them with hot sauce or cocktail sauce with horseradish.
That brings back memories of childhood. I LOVE sardines! I keep it simple: Sardines on black (rye) bread with a boiled or baked potato on a side. Mmmm delicious.

I buy my sardines from vitalchoice.com - they have the best packed in olive oil, water or spicy olive oil - they cannot be beat - I always buy the spicy olive oil kind because I like the kick and the can even contains a chili pepper. When I eat these little guys, I don't drain the oil AT ALL - stead I pour out the entire contents onto a bed of lettuce or spinach and BAM I have a salad with dressing already on it! Who would have thought? ha ha! Aw man, I am making myself so hungry right now!

Thanks for the website. Just wondering if they have sardines packed in water with no salt? I will have to check it out.
I believe I saw some at Trader Joes, if you have one near you.

Vitalchoice.com has the best sardines for sure. I have found the ones in tomato sauce are wonderful and you can always put some hot sauce on them if you want a kick. They seem high priced when you check out the website but, if you buy enough then you can get free shipping which makes it a good deal. The last time I dropped a good deal of weight was when I ate these for lunch every day with a vegetable and a dollop of plain yogurt. I like your lime idea...will try! Thanks!
I've never eaten sardines before.... what do they look and taste like. How do you eat them/prepare them?
They just look like little fish with their heads and tails cut off. They taste something like a richer version of tuna....but better. I eat mine out of the can. Sometimes with hot sauce and sometimes with plain yogurt.
So you eat the bones and the skin?
Yep, they are quite small so not that big of an issue.
