My Scale is Broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote  |  Reply

my scale is broken.

does anyone have suggestions on what kind i should get, where i should get it and how much i should expect to pay? is it worth getting one that tells me bmi and BF%?

Thanks!

(edited because, as much i enjoy being told i'm dependent, i really just want scale opinions. not that i didn't take your replies into consideration. perhaps i will go down to only a few times per day.)

I think this is a blessing in disguise.   If not having a scale is driving you crazy you were clearly over-dependent on the thing.  Don't buy a new one.  Find one of those pay-as-you-go scales in a nearby chemist shop, perhaps, and weigh yourself less often from now on.  There's more to life...

So, I've been scaleless for about a week now, and it's driving me crazy. I'm used to weighing myself about 15 times a day (and yes, I know all about fluctuations, so they don't bother me) that just feels so empty now. I've tried measuring myself at these times, but it's just not the same.

Obsess much?  Karma's a bitch.  Why don't you ease up and enjoy your vacation-live a little.  No wonder your scale gave up on you, your body is sure to follow.

I understand the desire to weigh yourself a lot--I weigh myself every day now that I'm close to my goal weight--but the fact that not having a scale would make you NOT ENJOY YOUR VACATION if you couldn't weigh yourself ahead of time tells me that maybe you would be better going without a scale for awhile. You're way too dependant.

gi-jane: it's driving me crazy mostly because it's such a habit. i find myself still going over to the spot where it was completely out of habit. i'm not obsessive over actually weighing myself or the numbers. and i know there's more to life! but it takes about five seconds if i'm home to step on the scale and record what it says. i'm really interested in knowing how my weight changes throughout the day.

I won't be able to weigh myself while on vacation, which is why i really want to do it before. i don't know what that has to do with karma and wtf at your last sentence. i treat my body perfectly well.

It's just a bad habit, as you say.  And what scotches a bad habit is a complete break from it.   So you've got a golden oppportunity.  I'd stay out of that Bed and Bath shop if I were you, go on you holiday and relax.  If you still want to buy some new scales when you get home, fine.  But you did come across originally as rather hysterical.

15 times a day.  As well as your profile stating that your BMI goal is 18.5 which is UNHEALTHY-you are not treating your body well although you may think so at the moment.  Enjoy your life and stop putting so much pressure on becoming emaciated.

"a BMI of 18.5 to 25 may indicate optimal weight; a BMI lower than 18.5 suggests the person is underweight while a number above 25 may indicate the person is overweight"

BAM

Why do you have to weigh yourself before vacation? I believe in your original post you said you were going away for a weekend--what's the worst damage you can do, diet wise, in two days? Or if you're going away for a week (you may have meant you were LEAVING this weekend), still, how much damage can you do (besides water weight)?

I agree with gi-jane, unfortunately. You seem to recognize that it's a bad habit--now you have an opportunity to stop. And I really do understand where you're coming from--I get the same way and tend to weigh myself multiple times a day. But when I go up to school, I don't bring my scale with me. That way, the only time I can weigh myself is when I go to the gym, therefore, a maximum of once a day.

Which pre-supposes that you have the absolute smallest frame for your height. Otherwise, a higher weight may actually be healthier. I was on the other end of that spectrum at 264 when I believed that when I got to BMI 25 that would be the perfect weight for me. As I get close, I realize that maybe I do not have the absolute largest frame of all the people in the world. You may in fact have the smallest frame of all the people in the world for your height. In which case "Bam" is well taken.

Get a scale that also measures body fat.

And you're how old? Pure semantics. You will find whatever source that you can to justify what you are doing to yourself.  Do what you will, but those 2 things on the side of your head called ears have a purpose other than for earrings.

okay.

i do understand that i weigh myself a lot. and thinking it over, i think i'll shave it down to maybe two or three. but i'm not ready to get rid of the scale yet. maybe one day i will be, but right now i don't see myself doing it.

this vacation was a goal date for me, so i was really hoping to find out if i reached it. also to see how much damage was done after since i won't have cc, a food scale, a gym, and will be eating most of my meals out.

21. old enough to know what's best for myself, thank you.

and when i googled BMI i found many sites that gave me the same 18.5-25 numbers. will i actually  go down to 18.5? maybe, if it looks best on me. if i find something i'm comfortable with along the way then i will stick there. honestly, as soon as i begin losing weight in my chest i will be happy; half of the reason i'm doing this in the first place is to avoid having to get a breast reduction.

and also, just so you know, i'm being very healthy and treating my body very well. in the five months i've been at this, i've only lost 16 pounds even though i rarely go over my limit which, since i'm not incredibly overweight, is a good healthy rate.

The thing is, according to your profile you have a large frame, which means a BMI of 18.5 probably isn't ideal for your body type.

I agree with gi-jane when he/she (sorry) says that it's a blessing in disguise.

I personally do not own a scale anymore, I go over to my neighbours every week or two weeks to weigh myself. I find I get less discouraged if I weigh myself at those intervals rather than everyday.. there is a lot to take into consideration like water retention, menstrual cycles, etc, and I found I got discouraged when I weighed myself everyday and the scale didn't change or said I gained a lb.

Good luck!

I bought a $6 scale from Walmart.  It tells me my weight.  That is all.  It's rather simple and I personally think that it shouldn't get too high tech.  When I need to konw my BMI and BF%, I just type in my info online.  I think that it's more reliable to not have those features (bad experiences with those kinds).

I have a habit of weighing myself once or twice a day, but like you, I don't really take those numbers to heart and understand about fluctuations and what-not.  For me, it's mostly just a habit.

Stick to just a regular scale that measures weight and not the BMI or body fat percentage.  Your BMI can be easily found by putting your height and weight in some on-line application and the body fat percentages given by scales are notoriously inaccurate.

Except that 18.5 is right on the cusp of being unhealthily underweight. Most dietitians and GPs will tell you to aim between a BMI of 19.5-23.5

jesus christ leave the girl alone.  people on this site can be so obsequious.  she just asked for scale suggestions.  ****.

If you were reading the posts correctly, she weighs herself 15 times per day and posters are a bit concerned about a low BMI goal weight.  This forum is about support todenotaton

I just want to clarify a few things!

18.5 is really, just a number. I have no idea what weight I will look/feel best at, so I just chose the lowest, healthy weight as a base number. If at 100 pounds I feel that I'm at my optimal weight, that is where I will stop. If that happens at 115, that is where I will stop. This is a trial and error process for me.

As for weighing myself ~15 times a day, I find fluctuations really interesting. I'll do things like weigh myself, drink a liter of water, weigh myself again, pee, weigh myself again, just to see the changes in the numbers. It's weird but I find it fun, lol. The only number I take seriously is when I weigh myself first thing in the morning.

And I got my new scale and can't wait to try it out :) it has a body fat calculator which I understand might not be accurate, but I figure I can at least use to to track if the number goes down. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I do appreciate you taking the time to respond!
