is my scale broken?

Quote  |  Reply

i've been weighing myself fine on the same scale for about 6 months.. the past few weeks i've been trying to lose my last 5 lbs and weighing myself consistently and tracking it. today i ate a pretty heavy meal and weighed myself afterwards and was only up a pound which is normal after eating.. but then i weighed myself again, after using the bathroom and my scale reads that i weigh 3 lbs more. it also says lo on it, which i guess means i need new batteries.. but i placed two dumbells on the scale which way 4 lbs and it read 4 pounds but when i get on it still gives me the other weight.. but i've always put the dumbells on the scale before weighing myself. what's going on? i'm gonna get a new scale but now idk what my real weight is.

The scale sounds as though it's working fine if you've checkweighed it with weights.  Your 'real weight' is whatever it says when you stand on it and it is going to change throughout the day.  Why was it that the low weight was correct but the higher weight is somehow incorrect?  A new set of scales could easily clock you as 5lbs heavier.   Be ready for that one.   If you don't like what you're seeing and only want it to tell you what you want it to say.... don't stand on the scales so often.

Put them away for a week and try to relax.   5lbs makes no material difference to your health or your appearance but developing an obsession could seriously damage your peace of mind....

Why would you weigh yourself after eating? That would make me miserable. Of course you're going to be up if you've had alot to eat, but it doesn't mean you're going to gain weight. That's determined by how many calories you're eating. Promise! Maybe you could just weigh once in the morning, or like GI Jane said, once a week?
