The SCALE!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey all, I wanted to know what kind of scale you use?  I used to use the scale at the gym, which was one of the  scales you would typically see at the doctor's office, which I loved.  However, about 2 weeks ago the scale wasn't working and they put another scale in place of it with a dial.  I also have one of these at home that I never use because I found it really hard to read, and I always thought those scales were inaccurate.  I'm considering buying a digital scale, but I dont know if those would be any better, OR make a difference?  Any suggestions?

Hi, as far as I'm concerned the digital scales are the best. I have one at home and it's very precise, it gives you decimals. (ex: 100.0) I used to go to a doctor to get weighed every week and my scale was very accurate. For example, if I was at 122.6 in the morning at home, I would be 122 1/2 on the doctor's scale at lunch time. I really enjoy the digital scale, as it gives you an exact number but I tend to get a bit obsessed with it. And it's fun to weigh yourself before and after you eat, just out of curiosity!

Hey, Thanks roylucie92, that helps.  I was also thinking that the digital scale was probably more accurate.  I mean I love the number that the dial scale shows me, since I have been working real hard the last few weeks, but I dont want to get too excited b/c I feel that it may be a little off, just because those things are just iffy.  I think I will go this weekend and buy a digital scale.  And knowing me, I too will become a bit obsessed!

Thanks again!

you're welcome! Good luck!
I've been having a similar problem. I recently discovered that the gym scale that I use may be 6 lbs inaccurate or more. I'm a broke college student so I am avoiding the thought of having to purchase my own scale, especially when the cheap ones are undoubtedly less accurate :-P

Accuracy is not as important as consistency.  It matters more what you weigh today compared to yesterday, but not so much what you actually weigh.  Yeah, I guess if you are within 3 lbs of your GW, then you may want accuracy.  But if you just want to lose 5 lbs or 50 lbs, having a consistent scale that is easy to read is the important thing.

I picked up a nice digital scale on clearance at CVS for $5.  Look around for bargains.

I have been using a regular scale and I have lost 25 pounds, then this last week I bought a digital and it runs 3 pounds heavier than my current one and I was a bit upset at first, but I had to remind myself that my starting weight would have also been 3 pounds heavier and that I have lost 25 pounds. I am also obsessed with weighing myself multiple times a day.
I agree with roylucie92.  The digital scales are pretty accurate and easier to read.  What I've done to test the accuracy is to put a 5 pound weight on it.  It was only off by .4 pounds.  My friend who is a doctor told me to do this test on a scale.  She has also told me that the doctor's in office scale is not always accurate.
That .4 could be a huge difference though, depending on whether we look at it as +/- .4 on any weight, or if we look at is as .4/5 lbs = 8% (which is around 12 pounds in a 150 person!).  I'm just saying, because you don't know how based on weight that inaccuracy is, I'd still be a bit concerned, unless you got on the scale with the 5 pound weight.
Pahpi, I vote for the digital scale.  It's just plain easier to read.

where do you buy one that last a long time and is accurate?

I have seen cheap ones at target but idk if they are good.

So I want a ditigal scale as well...any suggestions on brands that people like or don't like?

I actually don't like digital scales.  Mine is a P.O.S.  You step on it three times and get three different readings +/-3 lbs!  And that's stepping on and off at the same time of day.  I usually step on and off until I get a consistent reading.  Sucks!

I think I would rather have an analogue scale.  They seem to be more consistent, even if they aren't the most accurate.  I will miss the decimal stuff, but I can't get an accurate weight reading on this stupid digital scale.
