I'm an over-achiever...so school takes up a lot of my time.

How often should I be working out to see results quickly? All I want is to lose some belly fat!!!! Am I the only one who puts school work before exercising?!!!!

no!!  i am also in school and barely have time to work out because
i am always writing papers and studying!  maybe we can come up
with some good 30-45 min workouts to post and then do!  i also
just want to lose a little around the edges!
I'm also in university (UBC) doing my masters in Psychology, but I still work in atleast an hour a day of exercise. Most schools have a gym thats available to students. Remember, you don't have to do all the exercise at once, so try 10-15 minutes inbetween classes, ect...

I don't find taking 1-2hours a day out of school work is much of a grades killer (except around finals!) But I do bring my textbooks to the gym with me and read well im sweating!
Doesn't carrying all those heavy text books around count as weight lifting? ;)

i had been having the same problem for a while, but i finally decided that i need to keep myself in shape so i set aside time with my boyfriend every day and we run and work out together and it's really helped me -- physically and in school.  a little time away from the books has actually helped me focus more on my school work than i had before, and now i've got some thinking time, or down time for my brain. i just think about it like this, "my health is just as important to my life as my school work and my grades." i pick a time of the day that's good on each day, depending on classes and studying, and i make sure that i do at that time. it's been working so far! i would suggest setting aside a specific time (or times) to work out each day in order to maintain some semblence of a schedule in order to get yourself into it. once you've got it down, you can switch it up a bit to keep your body guessing!
Thanks for the suggestions...

Setting specific times each day is a really good idea, and i agree: my health IS just as important to me as my grades. I'm a very disciplined person, I know I can do it...I just needed that BIG extra push. Thanks!
finals are the worst... when you're having classes, at least you gotta walk to the classes... but when it's finals... you dun have class and have to sit around either at home or the library starring at the text books.... and that makes me crave food....
I take any opportunity I get to do some extra walking. I go to NYU so I do a lot of walking anyway. It does have a gym, but it's difficult to get there more than two or three times a week. Instead, I go back to my dorm between classes (a 15 minute walk each way), and on nice days I get my meals at my dining hall as takeout and bring them to the West Side Highway (about a 25 minute walk). During study breaks I walk there too. It's refreshing and helps you clear your mind and mellow out, or even to think about what you've been studying and absorb it more.

When you're making out your schedule for next semester, try and schedule some breaks between classes that are earmarked for working out. Or schedule your classes later in the day and go to the gym in the mornings. Take stairs instead of elevators whenever possible. There are tons of little tricks that I've found really make a difference.
Another thing you could do is buy a couple exercise videos and take a few 15 minute study breaks.  Its a nice way to take a break off studying and you get your exercise in all at the same time.
I don't know if you can find an empty room, but here at work, we have empty conference rooms. I pop into one during the day and do 3 sets of push ups, sit ups, tricept dips, lunges and squats. It takes only about 15 min, but it bumps my heart rate up for the day and helps tone. I call it my "ninja workout" because no one knows I do it, lol.

I also agree that walking can be great exercise. Walk as often as you can, up staircases, too. We can cram 10 min here, 15 min there and it all adds up!

If you think of going to the gym (or doing whatever type of exercise you do) as a class. At the beginning of each semester I print off my shedule, but make a couple changes, I add in a slot each day (giving myself one day off), that is called GYM. I find it very helpful, an hour a day really isn't that much. Plus if you know you are going to go to the gym than you'll get more done. As well, if you can afford it getting a locker has really worked for me, it means I can leave my clothes there, and go between classes, without having to carry my shoes, shorts etc. around with me. Once you start working out you'll feel great, it's like a healthy break from studying that refreshes your mind, you'll be suprised how much easier it is to concentrate on your studies if you don't feel like a slug:)

Also, if you have DC ++ you might be able to download some workout programs for free onto your computer, you don't need much room, which is always a great way.

If i feel like i need to burn of some calories while in school, while sitting at the desk i do things like lifting my legs and standing as much as i am able to. ..  little things like that really help.
