Sometimes i wish i could take over the school for a least a day to add some healthy foods!

Why serve french frys yes they are so good but not good for your heart.

Why serve cookies...they are full of fat.

Why serve bagles...? they have 600 cals plus cream cheese that has atleast 200 cals in it....are they crazy and me as and over weight girl knows that its not healthy nor do i want to see people my age going through this terrible weight loss process and felling they way i do!

agh I know what you mean. I don't know if you are in high school or college, but if you are in high school, hate to break it to you, but college cafeterias are the exact same way!!! Yeah they have some veggie and fruit choices but they taste disgusting!!! It's so frustrating because it is impossible to find foods and meals that fit in with what your body needs. And in college, they MAKE you have a stupid meal plan even if you would rather just buy your own food so you can make your own choices and eat what you need to. I really wish schools would take notice to what is going on and how the people who are eating in their cafeterias feel about the food. :(

I know exactly what you guys are talking about!

Our school district supposedly has a menu that we go by, with a wide range of things (not always healthy, but always with a fruit and veggie side) but they never go by it at our school, it's always a fried chicken sandwich or hamburger with french fries. They are supposed to have an "Other Option" meal which is a salad but it's never there.

And the vending machines! The best thing that happened is that they got rid of the ice cream machine, but we're getting another one so it doesn't matter! A pop tart has over 70 carbohydrates in it. They offer a honey bun with 112% of the daily needed value of saturated fat in it! It kind of pisses me off, and grosses me out. Do you know only one drink machine in a secluded part of my school that I've taken note of has a diet drink in it, the other about seven don't! It's crazy! Instead of selling doughnuts in the morning, what about fruit??? But then again, most kids our age don't care...so it probably wouldn't fly well.

I know! My school says their "healthy" but they don't have anything. They don't have wholegrain bread/rice. They fry their food. Its just ickyy.

My school's lunches are disgusting.  They bake instead of fry, but its still greasy tasting.  When I used to eat meat, I hated their burgers.  They are a soy mix, and from what I've heard now, they aren't meat at all, of course, I'm not taking any chances haha.

We have a salad bar, which is okay for a quick baked potato and bowl of lettuce with dressing.

It isn't the worst health-wise, but hey, they still order pizzas from cici's and they are the epitome of thin grease-covered snacks.  Snacks because they are so tiny.  They also order breadsticks, yes, those really big breadsticks with two cups of marinara sauce.  They are good, but at the same time bad, hahaha.

My school doesn't have any vending machines that I know of.  Teachers aren't 'allowed' to give candy to students anymore.  We do, however, have a "Candy Corral" in our new cafeteria in which you can buy chocolate bar, take5, reeses, baked lays chips, allsport drinks and other non-soda can drinks, water, and a variety of frozen treats, i.e. iscream youscream we all scream for icecream.

If all that unhealthy crap was taken away there would be some dogooder out there who will file a lawsuit saying that their freedom to choose to eat what they want is being taken away.

Speaking of freedom of choice, it is every person's own choice to choose what they want to put in their body. Most people  choose to eat the bad crap. And they have every right to, its their choice. Its up to every invidividual themselves to make the right food choices. Cant make the choice if its being taken away from them.

also, a cookie every now and then isn't bad. it may be filled with fat and sugar, but a little treat is deserved every now and then

YES. YOU ARE RIGHT.

we need to take a stand!!  whoo!!

haha or at least write a pettition for AFFORDABLE healthy alternatives...none of this $4 salad crap!

what bagel has 600 cals in it?

places serve unhealthy options. people have the right to choose what they want.

THANK YOU laren. ppl need to grow up and make the right choices for themselves. the school shouldn't have to do it for us. i bet one of the reasons ppl get upset like the ppl in this thread is because they are just dying to eat the crap. they want it gone so the temptation's gone.

gotta learn to say no by yourself eventually

The school lunches here are all fried foods (ICK) but they usually have a healthy choice, usually a salad. :) The vending machines are only allowed to have diet drinks in them

We have a 'break' for 15 minutes where the school will sell unhealthy food (including pizza) out the windows...

I just want a damn banana -_-

I might start bringing a sack lunch. Whole wheat bread sandwich - mmmmmm

The college that I'm planning to go to doesn't force you to buy a meal plan.

But uh...

Like I'm going to be able to afford to feed myself. I will probably keep friuts and veggies stocked up so  I dont have to live on raman doodles and coke.

I'm going to make a petition at school for more healthy lunchess. [: You all should try doing that too!

Its not like I'm tempted to eat the yucky food but sometimes I get hungry or I forgot my lunch and theres nothing to eat in the canteen so yeah.

At the public school I went to, our cafeteria sold all the junk you could think of - fries, pizza, mozzarella sticks, cookies, etcetera. In addition to that, we had vending machines filled with more crap. We also got soda machines taken out in place of "healthier" options like a machine that sold vitamin water and another filled with sugared milk.

The school I know go to has a school store and stuff available that's made by the school staff (no outside catering company). The store has stuff like Healthy Choice soups, baked chips, popcorn, juice, string cheese, cereal, etcetera, all pretty healthy options. We also always have milk and chocolate milk available for purchase as well as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on either white or wholegrain bread. Certain mornings they also have mini-bagels with either cream cheese or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spread. There's also a pizza day and a tuna sandwich day.

Overall the new school has a lot more options and they're pretty healthy too. However, either way I'm not really bothered by what the schools have available. Mercy_bobcat is absolutely right in saying that everyone has a choice in what they eat. Sure schools should probably make healthy options available, but what's stopping you from bringing your own stuff? As for colleges that require you to buy meal plans, I've visited a lot of schools since I'm currently a senior and applying to them and at all of the schools I've visited I've seen at least some healthy options. Sure they're outnumbered by tempting and tasty other stuff, but they're there. It's up to you as to whether or not you're going to eat it.

It's time to stop trying to place blame and take on some personal responsibility!

my school attempts to have healthy options... but once they're gone, they're gone. and they're always gone by tuesday morning haha.

it's so hard to eat around my friends. they can all eat anything they want without gaining anything and fully take advantage of it everyday. I've started to pack a salad or something healthy and just 'forget' all my money at home so there is no way for me to go buy anything unhealthy short of begging for money. it's working so far! damn those delicious cookies. [:

i know what you guys mean! they have some healthy stuff like salad with low cal. dressing, fruit, and skim milk but mostly everything else in unhealthy like processed chicken, foot long hot dogs, french fries, vegetables w/ cheese, ect. it just makes me sick. :P

but atleast i pack my lunch ^^

I usually pack my own lunch but for when I leave my lunch at home, my school isn't too too bad when it comes to healthy foods.

they have a delicious grilled chicken burger on whole wheat mmm.

but they do weird things too like we have these wraps, which wouldn't be too bad except they come loaded with sauce and for some reason they use butter to close the ends? it's soo nasty and plus they're like $4!
