Scientists Agree Global Warming is Real
Pfft. The planners that promote greater population density tend to live in a single-family dwelling on their couple of acres out in the countryside, in my experience.

It's Obama, for the record. And yes, I will love it, because I think we should have to pay more for things that are slowly destroying our earth so we're discouraged from using them. I barely make a living wage, so it's not like I'm some rich person who doesn't care how high my utility bills get. Remember how sales of SUVs essentially stalled when gas prices went up? Maybe higher gas/electric bills will encourage those of us who keep our thermostats set at tropical temperatures throughout the year to put on another sweater instead.
I'd rather get off the grid altogether...whether through a residential wind turbine, solar panels, or however else.
Original Post by emilyd22222:Meh, you don't have to know anything about global warming to get a Ph.D.- you could have a Ph.D. in English lit and sign a petition against global warming.
You don't even need to have a PhD in anything to sign that petition as a Phd, all you do is check the 'PhD' box ib the form you send in.
All that is solid melts into air.
I would suggest that someone who made a career out of "only studying weather patterns"is still probably more qualified than the rest of us to comment on the subject.
well to me the global warming debate is pretty mute. even if global warming from ourselves didn't exist, we still need to do certain things (ie recycling, im all for solar energy we have about another 5 billion years without it running out, etc). so to me there's no point in arguing with anyone whether it is real or not. ill leave that to others who seem to enjoy debating.

Indeed. So when I want to know about weather patterns, I'll look up a meteorologist. When I want information about climate change, I'll look up a climatologist.

Yeah I think we need to turn to renewable energy, but what the heck? Should I pay more taxes to keep myself warm in this "record cold" - global warming era? Or should I hold my breath so I don't release carbon into the atmosphere or let my car warmup in the morning.
I'm just waiting on socialized healthcare - so my job security goes out the window (I'm a nurse BTW). But - don't mind me - we all have to "give alittle" right?

All I'm saying is that we tend to not priotitize renewable energy and other solutions until it's hurting our wallets. The part I bolded is a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of global warming.

No - you could always just put on another sweater. Or consider investing in an energy efficient furnace / fireplace that could reduce your rates or result in a tax break. Yes, hypothetical, but so is the prospect of an energy czar forcing utility companies to produce less energy in order to drive up prices or paying a "warmth tax".

Is someone suggesting you pay more taxes to keep warm? Did I miss it when Obama proposed a tax increase on heating oil or gas? Or should I hold my breath so I don't release carbon into the atmosphere You breathing doesn't really change the amount of carbon in the atmosphere or let my car warmup in the morning Running the car does change the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, it might be a good idea to cut that out (it'd also save you money on gas so you can pay that extra mistery tax on heat).
I wasn't aware that there was any doubt that Global Warming was real. The only argument that I was aware of was whether or not we as humans occupying the planet have the ability to accelerate or decelerate the rate of global warming. I think the jury is still out on that.
Edit: and the lead sentence in the linked article seems to confirm this.

Well, as you stated, some of it is as simple as people acknowledging the warming, but don't believe it's affected by human behavior.
However, I have run into some that don't believe climate change exists at all, and like to use the "there can't be global warming, we just had 15" of snow" argument.

I suppose there is a possibility that the Ice Age is a myth and there never were any Glaciers covering most of the upper midwest.

Well, were you there to witness these "glaciers"? No? Hah - nuff said. ![]()
If there had been an Ice Age it would have been mentioned in the Bible, right?
That's what I'm talkin' about. Well done, Tom.

to your first question - yes. you should pay more taxes if you're using more than you need. to the second question, holding your breath won't accomplish much. thanks for offering. but as for letting your car warm up in the morning, unless it's a diesel or a 3-litre, 8-cylinder muscle car, you not only damaging the environment, you're damaging your engine by letting it idle while cold.
i'm going to skip that socialized health care comment, except to say: you don't get it.
edited to add, FYI: i installed an electric fireplace and a programmable thermostat in the fall. my electricity consumption has gone up by 20%, but my gas consumption has gone down by 80%.

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
