I went to the gym today for an hour. Today is my rest day from weights so I just did cardio at the gym. I got off and was craving sugar. Went to the grocery store and picked up some sweets: Orange slices, a kit kat bar, cinnamon sun chips.... The chips don't seem that bad to me since they have cinnamon on them and they are sun chips. But the orange slices and the kit kat bar seem like a big mistake. If you don't know, the orange slices are jelly-like and coated in sugar and look like a mini fruit orange slice... I ate 4 slices and 2 wafers from the kit kar bar. Sooo finally my question is, I've done this recently either once or twice a month for the past 4 months. How do I stop myself from going to the market after the gym and loading up on the sweets or just horrible snacks! Does anyone have any snack substitute recommendations? I ended the night with a small bowl of cereal 12 pieces of frosted mini wheats and half a cup of low fat milk.

You'd be MUCH better off having a protein drink or bar. Better yet have an apple and go home and cook something NUTRITOUS. FORGET the sugar! BAD!

I usually eat yogurt with granola after cardio.
Try eating some protein before you go into the gym. Maybe half an hour before. That always stops me feeling wobbly and needing sugar on the way out.

every once in a while i get this urge too. i dont know why it happens, but i do know it happens to alot of people. i think it's because your blood sugar drops really low and your body is telling you that you need sugar to bring it back up. its ok to eat afterwards, but junk food. chug lots of water, chew some gum, just distract your mouth until you get home, where im assuming you dont have alot of junk since you mentioned you went out and bought some. then eat a banana, a small amount of peanut butter, an apple, a glass of juice...stuff like that.

also if it helps think about what a waste of money that stuff was. it's only $5 or so but if you continue to do that, think of how it will add up. that might help.

Holy cow I LOVE those sugared slices... but not orange, cherry or strawberry (the reds). Do what I do and put a quarter in the samples box at the candy bin when you get groceries and eat just one. Works for me and I SO look forward to it. I think the ones at my grocer are Brach's and they are individually packaged. Wish I had to get groceries today.

I always try to eat oatmeal about 30 minutes before working out.  It gets me through my workout and I am able to get home and make something for dinner before getting hungry again.  You body is craving sugar (carbs) but not simple carbs...it wants complex carbs to get you through your workout.

I second (third? fourth? fifth?) the recommendation to eat before you work out, and especially eat protein.

Follow your workout with a banana. If one banana isn't enough to kill a sugar craving, try a spoon full of honey. Never done that myself, but I know people who swear by it. 60 calories. I'm guessing there is more than that in 40% of a kit-kat and some of those (*cough* delicious *cough*) orange slices.

Natural sugar is better than refined sugar any day. Give it a shot. An hour or so before you work out eat some protein (even just a little beef jerky), 30 minutes prior, eat a banana, as soon as you're done, eat another banana. See how you feel. Two medium bananas and a pretty good hunk of beef jerky and you're only talking about 350 calories.

I count the before-and-after workout snacks as one of my six daily meals.

sun chips may look healthier, and they are delicious, but they are no better for you than any other chips out there! don't be fooled by their clever marketing attempts to make them look better for you than any other chip.
