Hi Sarah,
It's my understanding that in addition to the fiber, the whole wheat products have a lower GI (pardon the spelling, glycemic index?) and so your body has a slow release of sugar vs. the spike the refined foods give.  This results in a longerlasting feeling of fullness and less cravings (at least in my case, it does).  If you have any sugar issues, try not looking at the foods just for their calories but do a web search on their GI number.  My DH has high cholesterol and his sister has type 2 diabetes, so I've found some really tastey recipies that are lower in fat but also low in their GI rating.  An example is a cake made with rasberries and white bean puree (sounds gross, tastes great).HTH,
Kirstin
That definately helps! Thanks Kirstin.

Ok, it's been too long since I have been on here.  I guess I'm going to have to put a note in my daily list to check this thread.  I have gotten so used to the SCS thread that I forget about this one.

Sarah-I'm with Kirstin about the whole wheat thing.  It has taken me awhile to get my family on board as well but they have finally came around and it has made it a lot easier.  My biggest problem is getting 1% or fat free milk.  DH refuses to drink it because of the consistency so I've got to buy Braum's milk because their milk is thicker.  It is a struggle, but I know one day it will pay off.

I don't even want to talk about this weekend.  Bad, bad, bad.  So, I'm not going to focus on it and put my energies on today and what I eat and how much TODAY.  Hope everyone else is doing good today!

Are there any coffee drinkers on here?  I drink my coffee with creamer and sugar.  I have switched my sugar to Splenda and that has helped a lot but no matter what I use for creamer it gives me a D.  I've used fat free/sugar free Coffeemate creamer and I've used half & half.  I don't like drinking it black either and I'm not ready to give it up just yet so does anyone have any ideas for coffee creamer?
Christ-I'm not much help. I've always drank my coffee completely black. Sorry. . .

Hi Christi,Sarah (eeyore63125) said that the grade was just on the nutritional rating on the food, and doesn't factor in the calories consumed, etc. So I chose to have half and half in my coffee/tea and limit the number of cups to keep my "empty" calories down, and am trying to make better food choices for the rest of the day.  Something about the coffee-mate, my husband's Dr. said it wasn't good if you have high cholesterol, so if you have that problem, you might want to go for the real thing!
Sarah N. - happy that it helped!

Thanks Kirstin!  I thought the real thing would be better too but when I plugged my numbers in it said it was just as "bad" as the fake stuff.  I only drink one cup a day and I only put 2 tbsp half & half.  I've tried black and just can't do it.  I love my morning coffee and really didn't want to part with it.  Thank you, that did help a lot.

Oh, I was also going to ask if anyone has problems with nighttime hunger.  The past few nights I've felt like I am starving right before I go to bed.  It is so strong that I have to eat something.  I've opted for plain cheereo's and 1% milk but I hate going to bed with something on my stomach.  Does anyone else struggle with this and if you do what do you do?

Christi - I used to be really, REALLY bad about night time eating. (like an ENTIRE bag of popcorn EVERY night around 10pm) It's gotten better now that I'm eating better foods and working out. I'm wondering if your calorie intake is low. Also, what are you eating for dinner?

Another suggestion, have you tried just 8oz of the milk? I know it helps curb my appetite when I'm hungry.

Whew!  I also keep forgetting to check in here...........

Coffee......not often as I also only like it with flavored creamer and sugar!!!  So it's a real treat and not a daily thing for me!!!

About the whole wheat products......we did switch to whole wheat and other grain breads.  But none of us liked the pasta.  And getting all of us to cut out the actual out and out treats and "bad" foods, we still use the regular pasta.  But if you've successfully switched your kiddos (and hubby!!) then you've done amazingly!!!

Okay.....I'm also a night eater.  Of course, with insomnia I don't feel "sleepy" until 2 or 3, sometimes later.  And yes!  I'm hungry for breakfast by then!!!  LOL

Hahaha!  Lee, I think you and I are on the same wavelengh!  Sarah, I've never thought about just drinking in the milk but that is a great idea!  I think that I have been taking in to few calories.  Dinner I am really trying to watch my portion sizes and choosing healthier options but money is tight and I can't afford to go to the grocery store so we're eating out of the cupboards for awhile which is making SIS happy but not my diet.

This is all about babysteping so right now portions is my focus.  I guess because of lowering my portion sizes for dinner it makes me hungry a few hours later and so much so that I almost can't stand it.  I've read in a few places that you should eat when you are hungry but to eat protein since your body digests it quicker but then other places tell you not to eat before you go to bed.  I'm not sure who to believe!

On that note, not knowing will help me to try to get into bed earlier.  If I'm asleep I can't be hungry.  On my insomnia nights I'll choose the glass of milk and see how that goes.

All I seem to hear lately about overweight Americans is the fact that our portion sizes are so large. We don't even notice anymore. That was one of the first things I tackled and I think just watching your portion sizes will help tremendously!

Good luck Christi. . . you are doing a great job!

Everything is going by the wayside, I must get back on here and enter what I'm eating!!!! Things are crazy with PAC and back to school stuff, my DD birthday is coming up and my mom is having eye surgery - and all I want to do is eat chocolate chips!!!!!  I am going to enter everything that enters my body tomorrow and drink plenty of water. Babysteps... hey, Christi, if you are having a hard time cooking, try searching for Skillet recipies on line - I found a few that basically adapt to what you have on hand (1 cup of a starch, 1 cup of meat, 2-3 cups veggies and 3.5 cups liquid (you can add a can of soup and water or just use broth)  So far we've tried beef, macaroni, lowfat cream of mushroom, celery, onion, carrots and corn and canned salmon, rice, chicken stock, celery onion, carrots and peas.  I did sprinkle lowfat cheese on both too, turned out really tasty.  For a one dish meal in under 40 minutes, it works for when I just don't know what to make.

Thanks Kirstin!  I'll have to look into those skillet meals! :)

I am going to pose a question for the group:  what are your favorite healthy snack to eat?  I am getting bored with what I am eating and would like a fresh perspective.

My favorite healthy snacks are fat free cottage cheese, celery with peanut butter, apples with peanut butter or fresh fruit/veggies.  Hope these ideas help!!

Yes, any ideas do!  I love cottage cheese and I do have apples and peanut butter.  Thanks Eeyore-Sarah!

I like snacking on air-popped popcorn.  It's like 30 calories for a cup so you can much down quite a bit.  I don't add any butter and just eat it plain (it has taken me awhile to get to that).  I do sprinkle a little bit of seasoning if I am really wanting flavor.
