Sedentary vs. Light? Ekk! Help!

Quote  |  Reply

Okay. I used to be sedentary. Wake up at 5:30, and get online while straightening my hair. Go to school. Come home. Get online. Sleep.

But, now, I get up around 9:00 or 10:00, I workout every other day, and then I dance for about an hour the days I don't workout. I'm going to start swimming as soon as they open the pools. I was also outside almost all day today, shooting baskets, walking, driving the golf cart and attempting to teach my little brother how to play badminton.

That sounds way more than it is - trust me.

But, should I stay as sedentary or change my activity to light?

Also, I changed it to light to see what would happen. As sedentary, I burn 1,940 "just being alive" and I worked enough today to add 610 to that (2,550 calories burned total today) and as soon as I changed it to light activity, it went up to 2,730. Which is 180 to my daily total. And I figured that that is 180 added to my 1,940 "just being alive". Meaning as lightly active I burn 2,120 "just being alive".

Any advice/does this sound right at all or am I as off as I think I am?

I think that sounds about right.  Change it to light activity.  You are moving around more- keeping your body working.  Way to go!

(: Thanks.

I have a similar question.  I am definitely sedentary at work (8-10 hours of the day) but aside from that I am pretty busy.  I ride my bike 2 miles (round-trip) to the store a couple times a week, walk .5 miles to and from the bus every day, walk .5 miles to go out at the nearby shopping district.  Aside from that I tend to be pretty mobile in my off hours because I sit all day at work.  Any suggestions on whether I should mark sedentary or light?

I used to log myself as lightly active just because of walking in between classes, and then log my workouts on top of that. Then I asked the resident nutritionist on this site. She said if you set yourself as light, then don't log EVERYTHING you do, just log what you do 'above and beyond' your normal exercise. So the walking around and badminton probably don't get added, but the working out and swimming does.

On the downside, that means that if I don't actually do anything that day, I only burn about 1600 cals all day. I can't imagine eating that little to MAINTAIN...
