going to see DOCTOR...... what to expect?

the schools making me go to the doctors........

 

i'm scared. i'm 5ft2 and weigh like 83-7 pounds......

 

what would the doctors do to me?
what would they make me do?
what would they ask?
what would they suggest? (do i have to take counceling, medicine)
tests?

how long are theses visits? (I HAVE 5 HUGE TESTS THE DAY AFTER) and i dont have time to go ..... WHYYY is it on monday :*(..
and i would really like to try to recover on my own without therapists or nutritionalists..... especially nutritionalists that force you to eat some "healthy" junkfood *(chocolate, cake) just b/c i'm underweight... i NEVER liked those snacks my LIFE even before ED anyways >: [......


basicially, what should i expect? scarry?.......




what do you guys think about my current conditions?
how long do i have to live?
would i still be able to go to school and be on tennis team?
i want to do kickboxing XD

First of all, don't be afraid. Your school has done a good thing for you, really. The dangers of being underweight are numerous.

This is a particular insidious consequence, because the affected persons do not notice the danger, they can feel fit and may be brilliant for example in endurance sports. After the occurrence of first spontaneous fractures the damage is often already irreversible.

Your doctor will likely address the typical problems that come with being underweight. He will likely ask about the regularity of your period or if it is absent, as well as testing your blood cell count and possibly, given your very, very low BMI, refer you to an outpatient, day or inpatient scheme. Depending on how your results come back medications will vary. Your first visit time will be as long as it takes; you say you "don't have time to go" but please, remember, your health is crucial. You will likely be told to cut out all exercise.

I remember when I began recovery, and all I could think was: "Goodness, I'm going to have to eat so much cake" because I honestly couldn't think of good foods to eat to get my calories up! Fast forward to the future, and I am having to average about 3000-4000 calories a day - while still eating 90% clean.

Eating good foods to gain weight isn't as tricky as it sounds. Your new friends will be in high-calorie, low-density foods. These are exactly as the name states: food smaller in size compared to their calorie content.

(The items underlined are veggie friendly (although not neccessarily vegan friendly!))

Example Sources of EFAs, or essential fatty acids:
Oily fish - eg salmon, pilchard, mackerel
Seeds - eg sunflower, flax, pumpkin
Nuts - eg walnuts, almonds
Nut butters - eg peanut, cashew, almond
Oils - eg extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, rapeseed (canola) oil - there is a massive list of EFAs in oils here.

Example Sources of Proteins:
Oily fish - eg salmon, pilchard, mackerel
Red meats - eg beef, lamb
White meats - eg chicken, turkey
Legumes, pulses - eg chickpeas, beans of all types, lentils

Nuts - eg walnuts, almonds
Nut butters - eg peanut, cashew, almond
Certain grains - eg quinoa, oats
Soy - eg tofu, soy beans, soy derived products
Dairy - (when gaining, opt for whole fat) eg cheese, milk, ice cream

Example Sources of Healthy Carbohydrate:
Wholegrains - eg oats, whole grain bread, brown rice, quinoa, corn (to name just a few!)
Starchy vegetables - eg sweet potato (or yam), other variations of potato, radishes
Fruits - eg bananas, apples, pears, berries, plums, peaches, pineapple
Dried fruits - (particularly useful for gainers) eg figs, dates, prunes, apricots, raisins and sultanas
Other natural sugar sources - eg honey


You also want to make sure you are getting plenty of fibre, though this is usually easily done by eating a well balanced diet. I would suggest staying away from gainer formulas as they are NOT neccessary - it is much easier and generally better to make your own smoothies! And, while you really ought to not worry so much about numbers as you will be getting more of eat food group with a higher intake, do still monitor your salt if you can.

But remember! Moderation is key. Remember to let yourself have treats once in a while during your gaining route as, just as eating all junk can be bad, so can eating entirely clean and not indulging a little once in a while! You can have your cake and eat it too. ;]

dont be scared, really the doctors will help!!

first, ive gotta say i wish my school forced me to go to the doctors before it got so far!! youre pretty lucky

anyway, the doctors wont do anything to you, theyll ask questions about how much you eat, how you feel about eating etc. just be honest! i dont think theyll 'make' you do anything (ie inpatient) because of your attitude, you seem to want to get healthy and gain so theyll be very willing to give you a chance :D they probably will do bolld tests, but maybe not that day, its just important to check everything is working ok and youre not defficient in anything!

also, if you see a nutritionist, they wont try to make you eat junk, as long as you show youre willing to eat higher calorie healthy foods such as nuts and olive oil :)

what do i think of your current condition?? yes, youre underweight and you need to gain, but form this message i feel your mindset is more healthy, which means you probably will be very successful in getting better!

you'll def. still be able to go to school, but playing tennis im not so sure...sorry :( but you should use that as motivation to get better :)

Charlie: I believe that schools can't ask a doctor to intervene in the UK, only reccommend to the student that they go see one. Bizarre, isn't it?

i ahve the exact same stats as you, and thanks so much lala, because now i realise HOW important it is for me to gian more weight, i will get onto this ASAP :|

Slr: I'm glad it has motivated you. I wish I'd gone to my doctor and started gaining sooner than I did; at my lowest, I was 14.3 BMI and only went to my doctor when I'd hit it. I'd developed severe iron-deficiency anemia, had drastic muscle atrophy in my legs, my hair was starting to come out, my skin was yellowed and covered in dry patches, my period had stopped... for some reason, the only thing that came out okay was my bone density. Even at a higher blood cell count and weight, now, I am still hit by after effects - as passing out on Friday proves. So, to you and the OP - please, before things may get any worse, do get gaining ASAP. <3

Well i went through this before. They are going to take your blood pressure, weigh you, do some tests to check your bone mass, ketones in your urine, blood test to check glucose levels, and check your knees reaction to being hit with that little cudgel. It is basically a physical but with more concern. They will tell you to gain a certain amount of weight before the next time they see you and suggest you eat certain food items. If you return and have dropped more weight you could be hospitalized or referred to a specialist. They are basically checking your health to make sure everything is working properly. If your are fine and well and check out with normal stats they wont make you gain weight just suggest that you do not lose any more weight.

I suggest you eat something before you go in so your glucose levels will be normal and you will have a better blood pressure. Eat like a boiled egg and 1 cup of oatmeal and you should be fine. Also in treatment, no one forces you to eat anything, they just dont give you any other choice. They will make you sit at a table and u cannot leave until you eat, but if you are really DGAF (dont give a ****) then you can just stomp back to your room but then its annoying cause you have this stupid therapist haggling you about your feelings. They basically drive you so insane that you eat so you can get the **** out.
