Do you see any problems with this?
I drink decaff earl grey iced tea (about 48 oz) all day long. I probably use 2 full lemons in it.
Do you see any problems that the lemons could cause? I have heard that it weakens the tooth enamel.
Appreciate your input.
i have heard that any acidic kind of thing can wear down your enamel layer but it does that naturally over the years anyway.
it not lemons, just the 'acid' all acidic foods would be like that, you can't completely avoid it, personally i wouldn't worry.
do you brush your teeth?floss? (lol now i sound like mum)
how many cups do you have on average?
LOL that was cute. Yes I brush in the morning and before bed. I only floss a few times a week not daily like I should
I'm kinda bad about that.
I have a huge glass that holds about 18 ounces and I drink about 4 of those a day along with 1-2 glasses (same size) of water.
I just had a thought ugghhhh lol I have not been counting my lemons as calories. I don't eat them I just use the juice and plop them in my tea glass. I like to watch the pretty yellow things floating around. lmao....cookoo ![]()
lol!
well if your looking after your teeth and no one is saying any different i can't see a problem. if you have dentist check ups when you need to (once a year or something??!?!?) he'd pick something up if you were excessive, which it doesnt seem like you are.
The juice of one lemon gives you about 12 calories and 36% of your daily vitamin C. Not bad!
yeah in the summer i drink water with lemon, just add in another brushing or so during the day. i try to after lunch & my afternoon snack.
but with the enamel layer, its wear and tear, so brushing you teeth too often, hard or for too long can wear it down too. like i said it happens as you get older anyway. maybe a liquid mouth wash as well each day to help clean everything out, i use listerine :)
My dentist warned me against drinking lemon all the time. I was using it just squeezed in hot water in the morning. She said it was especially damaging if you brush right away after drinking it while your enamel is still softened. About the flossing: it's probably even more important than brushing. My sister never had a cavity but started losing her teeth because of gum disease. She wasn't flossing much. She has now spent $20,000 to have four implants put in to replace missing teeth. Ouch! I was lucky to run into a young Coast Guard dentist when my husband was in the service in the early 70s. He got us both flossing religiously. My teeth are in great shape at 58 years old. As you get older you really appreciate your teeth!
barbarriba.........yikes!
Well my Mom didn't have the money to take care of my teeth when I was a kid (my parents divorced when I was 5). So when I finally went to live with my Dad when I was 16 he was very upset to find out my Mom had not been taking me to the dentist and he paid to have 8 fillings put in and a crown. Ughhhhh
I have tried to take care of my teeth since then but I do admit I am lax when flossing regularly. I know you are right and I have heard it time and time again. There was a point in my life where I was flossing daily but somehow got lax. I think this thread has made me really think about it again and how important it is.
My roomate who is only 42 didn't take care of her teeth plus it runs in her family to have peridontal disease and she had to have all hers pulled and now wears dentures.
I have found this powder (yeah more chemicals lol) and it tastes like lemon and you add it to your iced tea or water. I don't know if that would be better then the lemon or not. I will have to check with my dentist.
Luckily I have found a wonderful dentist who is putting me out and doing several procedures at once; root canal, deep cleaning, fillings and 2 crowns. Woo hooo. So while my teeth aren't real good they are not super bad either but i'm glad i'm getting them taken care of soon and will ask him when I have that appointment.
Thanks for your post!
My dentist, who is a very smart guy told me I didn't have to floss all my teeth - just the ones I wanted to keep...lol.
I don't know what it is exactly, but I might be more concerned by the Decaf Earl Grey than the lemon. What is this tea? Is it a powder or real tea, just made cold? What's in it?

Hey kindal, I remember one more thing I've heard about lemon juice in beverages: It helps to drink through a straw. Not a good idea with hot beverages. But with iced tea, it might really help. Because I really hate to discourage someone from using lemons. I have a tree my yard--also a lime tree. I both fruits in all kinds of things. My salad dressing is always a little olive oil and the juice of a lemon or lime. Bottles salad dressing seem so artificial after getting used to fresh lemon.
Nothing wrong with Earl Grey tea. Just a little oil of bergamot--which comes from a type of orange--in black tea. Too much tea a day will deplete calcium though. Moderation in all things. That's the goal anyway.
johnnypenso.....LOL my dentist made the same joke.
It's Earl Grey tea bags. I put them in my tea maker. It's real tea and my tea maker pushes hot water through the basket holding the tea bags and whala...tea! I refrigerate it and put ice and lemon and splenda in it to drink.
Earl Grey tastes much better then regular orange peoke tea IMHO. :) I stopped using the regular earl grey about a month ago as I was afraid I was getting too much caffeine.
barbarriba.....oh yes I forgot about the straw trick. That also helps keep stains off the teeth. Thanks for that :)
I love the taste of bergamot! I make my tea pretty weak....I use 4-6 bags for the whole pitcher. These are the small bags.
Did you know that tea has a massive amount of fluoride; it hardens your teeth and along wth the pheonols in it, reduces bacteria in the mouth. Sweet tea is evil for teeth because of the sugar. Stains: mostly it just stains the stuff that doesn't get flossed or brushed off, kind of like a brown version of the pink tablets to help kids learn how to brush. Whatever does not get cleaned off, the tea statins will find it and leave a crusty brown line. Yum. That's what my dentist said anyway.
Interesting....nope I didn't know tea had flouride in it. Hmm I wonder if my decaff tea has flouride or if the processing to make it decaff took all that out. I think i'm switching back to regular as the decaff has weakened the taste of the bergamot which is why I drink it to begin with.
Hey I like the reducing bacteria thing. Since this post I have been flossing regularly. ![]()
Ya my teethe are definately stained through years of tea and coffee drinking. I use to smoke 2 packs a day too. Thank God I quit that years ago whew. I don't drink coffee much anymore as tea is my preference.
After all my dental work i'm going to have my teeth whitened too.
Thanks for that information....I had no idea it had massive amounts of fluoride...that's good to know.
Do a search on Lemon, Lemon Juice and its overall health benefits. You will be amazed on what a favor you are doing to your body by taking a daily consumption of lemon juice. Not only is it a great aid to weight loss, it is a great detoxifer and is wonderful for the liver.
Keep it up, nothing wrong with a little lemon.
Just a tip on the whitening for you. I had mine done and they are super-super sensitive now. I asked my hygienist about it and she said that was a common side effect of whitening them. I have since heard some not so good things about whitening, so do your homework first!!
I was horrified to read here that tea had fluoride in it. I gave up tap water for that reason. I've done some research on this topic and I'll make a post on it later, in this same section. You won't want to miss it...
jbrownnolan....wow thanks for that :) I guess there is good and bad to some things. I tried the powder packets and I don't know I think lemon is best, it's natural. Maybe I will just cut down on how much I use because I really do use alot.
Jonnypenso;
Is flouride bad ? :( I thought it was good for the teeth no? Let me know please.
