The Senior Corner - Are You Over 50?
September, 2008 - we now have a group! It's called 60s 70s and Higher! There are also age specific groups for all ages. Please stop in an join, and please do participate.
Time for all of us older members to get to know each other. All the youngsters have made themselves known so now it's our turn.
I was 65 in April, 2007, and happily retired.
How about you?
I'm 51 tomorrow and still adapting to this new decade of my life. Amazing how quickly time goes! And how the body changes and you're presented with new challenges. I'm on a swim team with folks that range in age from 18 all the way up to their 90's. It's amazing what you can do when you stay consistent, although I learned the hard way that you have to start something new more slowly than if you were 15 years younger. But stick with it, whatever 'it' is and you'll move along. Anyway, nice meeting you all!
I'm 58 and just started this program 6 days ago. I have struggled with my weight but after retirement in 4/2005, it is really out of control. According to CC, I should weigh 127 and I weigh 170 now. I am living in Mazatlan, Mexico nine months per year, so I have an extra challenge with food choices. I need to step up my exercise and I just started yoga and I plan to walk two or more miles five times a week. Any encouragement would be appreciated.
Retirement is great isn't it? I just wish I could persuade Bill (my sweetie) to retire. He thinks he'll go crazy from boredom if he does.
Retirement isn't that hard Claire. Takes a while to settle into it, but definitely good for you.
You're all spring chickens! I'm 73, looking to drop 30 pounds by late August...and really determined to get there.
Forgot to add that I'd like to meet anyone else in my decade. Please weigh in!
Hello everyone! I will be 64 in July, have been lifting weights for past 8 years, time off for knee surgery and hip replacement. Lift weights 3 days per week at gym, aerobic/stretch at home 4 days, walk dog 1 1/2 hours per day, do 200 crunches before I get out of bed, and a little bit more. I NEED TO GET A LIFE!! Just learned doc wants to replace other hip and then knee. Gained 40 lbs when quit smoking, lost 30, regained 15, now need to get off the 25 and keep it off. Trying to postpone that surgery as long as I can. Being a "senior" may not be the grooviest time of my life but it ain't too shabby! Glad to know you all are out there.
Hi mauntler and kaloriekounter! Maturity has it's percs, but losing weight is harder. I figure we can band together and help each other.
Thanks Mauntler. I have never been called a spring chicken. Made my day.
New Year's Day I hit 149.5, today it's 144! Yippee!! This website is great. I am actually keeping track of what I am eating, ALL OF IT, and hopefully I will get the 25 pounds off. I can comfortably sit in my jeans, at last. Ever onward & upward or is it downward? How is everyone else doing?
I'm not doing very well right now. I maintained all during the holidays with the intention of getting back on track in January. Then my 94 year old mother fell at home and broke two vertibrae right where the ribs meet the backbone. I've been run ragged, first to the hospital and now to the rehab center. Mom lives with her 89 year old sister and my aunt is a very nervous fuss budget who is afraid of being alone. Both of them are nearly blind and can't read their own mail. I've been trying to give them as much support as I can. I'm not in terrific health myself and it really takes a toll. I've not been eating right and have gained back 5 pounds.
I don't want to undo all my hard work of the past year but can't seem to find the energy to do what I know I have to do. That first week when she was in the hospital, food went bad in my refrigerator because I was too tired to cook.
Anyway, it's hard right now, but don't think I'm giving up. I'll just have to find some strategy to do what I have to do and take care of myself too.

Sorry to hear of your problems Claire. Sounds like a hell of a lot to be coping with. But don't give up yet. Just keep posting here.
Sounds pretty overwhelming. Any chance you and sweetie can plan a day or two away once things settle down? Easier to deal with stress when you know there is reward. Hang in there.
Thanks friends! It's a little hard to plan, but we did have a nice day on Sunday - brunch and a play with friends. What usually happens is, I plan something nice and then the roof falls in. All you can do sometimes is laugh.
I suspect I am the oldest, will be 69 in February and I have lost 52 lbs. since July 2nd, I did take September off when I was on holidays and 3 weeks in December.
Have 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. I am often mistaken for my chilren's sister. Looking young is not all it's cracked up to be.
I do feel considerably better and more energetic with this weight loss, still have 40 to go and hope to have this accomplished by summer.

Starting to do the stepper and working into some upper body strength...;-)
Hi all, I'm going to be 50 in march. All of you sound younger and more active than me. I have 50 lbs. to loss. I have arthritis and by evening real problem with knees and feet. Messed up while in army and have just gotten worse. Hope you all don't mind me joining in before my big 50. My kids are grown, I have one grand daughter who will be 9 also in march. My husband and I are semi-retired , I work during the school year and and I want to be able to enjoy this time. Trying to stay between 1,200 - 1,500 cals. a day. Really have to work on this exercise thing. Have a great day everyone.
Hi everyone, it is nice to see so many active "Seniors". I think we are all young at heart. I am 56. Found out yesterday that the breast reduction I have been waiting for (over 4 years) might happen as early as February or March. I am a little afraid. But I can't wait. Have lost 21 pounds so far. Have 35 to go. I'm 5'5" and weigh 165. The doctor said I didn't really have to lose any weight but I know that the more I lose the happier I will be. Good luck to all on "The Journey To a Healthier Life Style"!
I will also be 61 in May. I started off at 190 the first of Nov. Joined CC the last of Dec. I have a bad back(lumbar) bone spurs in my feet. I am trying to loose weight. Did real good until this month. I can't seem to get out of the dreaded 70's. I have only been eating around 600 to 700 cal a day. I have been reading about the body going into the starvation mode and decided to go up to 1000 cal. a day yesterday. most likely will gain weight at first but hoping it will start to go down after that. I hate these plataus(sp?). I would like to have an e-mail buddy that I could relate to, so that we could compare and help each other. I live in a small town in Alabama. No gym. Me and my husband are on disability. We can't afford the expensive exercise equiptment. Glad I found this forum on seniors. It's nice to relate. My goal is around 155.
