The Senior Corner - Are You Over 50?
September, 2008 - we now have a group! It's called 60s 70s and Higher! There are also age specific groups for all ages. Please stop in an join, and please do participate.
Time for all of us older members to get to know each other. All the youngsters have made themselves known so now it's our turn.
I was 65 in April, 2007, and happily retired.
How about you?
Okay...this is my third try at a response, sharoyn. I've managed to wipe out my first two efforts before I got a chance to send them...I hope the third try is the charm!
I'm fairly new on this site (Jan. 9), but everything I've read so far indicates that 600 to 700 calories per day is way too severe. Most literature says that 1200 should be the minimum for women to keep everything working as it should. I'm trying to stick to 1200 a day, and I find the CC food log a huge help! A retired teacher, I buy a lot of food from the Market Day fund raiser program in order to support my school system. I'm delighted to find that almost every MD items is listed, and I notice that knowing that I'm going to report every bite I take makes me think twice about putting it in my mouth!
I think that exercise is a most important factor in the weight-loss equation. For the past 7 months or so, I've been walking 2 miles a day, 7 days a week. I do this for three reasons -- cardiovascular health, an effort (so far mostly in vain) to lose weight, and a need to keep my 2-years-young knees strong and operational. I've just added a three-times-weekly strength-training session that I read about a long time ago in the Reader's Digest. It was developed by a Tufts University women's study. I use 5-lb. weights for that.
I am 5'3", and CC calculates that I should weigh 127, a goal it says I can reach by late August. I currently weigh 158.6, down a bit from the 160.6 I weighed Jan. 9. My CC graph looks like a roller coaster!
That's a bunch about me and my efforts. Let us hear more from you.

Add me to the Seniors corner too. I will be 59 in a couple of weeks. Retired... not because I wanted to. I moved to Quebec and it is difficult to find work if you don't speak french. lol. Met the love of my life on the internet and we have a wonderful life. Nice to meet everyone here, anyone bring a deck of cards. Always looking to meet new friends. Seriously, I am here for support in my quest to lose 140 lbs. I started losing weight about a month before I found C-C so I am not sure how much my total weight loss is. I suspect around 20 lbs as I am in a smaller pant size now and everyone is noticing a difference. Well that's me in a nut shell. Some days are easy others make me wonder if I will ever reach my goals but we all gone through that.
Down a pant size! That's cause for celebration! Quebec is a lovely city in the summertime; I'll bet it's really lovely in winter. I'm an Ohioan, and we've had very little winter this year, but there's a bit of snow on the ground today and it's COLD and windy.
Ooops Sorry I meant the province. We live close to Montreal. Quebec city is really cold in the winter but it is also lovely. They have a huge winter carnival each year and the ice hotel is there. Never been to the hotel yet. We are just getting the snow now. -17 celcius today.
Hi everyone, I have been on this site for a couple of weeks. I am looking for some information of Breast Reduction. I have been on a list for 4 years. I saw the Doctor in Novmeber and she told me I didn't have to lose any weight unless I wanted to. I was 186 at the time. I have lost 21 lbs so far. 20 of it was before Christmas. I only gained 3 lbs over the holidays and I have lost that plus one more pound. I found out yesterday that I could be going for the operation as soon as February or March. I am hoping it is March because I do sail repair and I will not be busy then. Come April and May and the summer I will be really busy. I won't be able to handle the sails as they are heavy for a few weeks. I would love to know if any of you have had this done. This is being done for medical reasons. I have been large breasted since I was 24 and had my first child. (I have 8 children) one was adopted, five I gave birth to and two are my step-children. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm a little afraid.
Hi Chippertoo, I live in Moncton, New Brunswick. Just a province over. Quebec city is a beautiful city. I have never been to winter carnival but I think it would be fun. It was at least -25 C. with windchill factor today. I had to pick up one of my granddaughters from school. (walking) it was cold. but you just have to dress properly and you are fine. I think you are on my friends list.
Hi mauntler, I just added you to my friends list. Hope you don't mind. Do you belong to the Red Hat Society? You sound like a fun person.
I am on your list. (thanks for being my friend). I have never had a reduction, in fact, I am afraid I might lose what little I have when I lose all the weight I want to. Have you checked to see if there is a support group or information on the internet? I don't know a lot about New Brunswick. I will check it out on the web. Off to get groceries now. Have a good evening.
hi, I just joined yesterday and am so happy to find this site. I am 66 and glad to be. I am enthused about finally finding people that are on the same path as me. I hope I can keep on doing ass good as I have for the last two days. My goal is to lose 168 pounds. I started walking aobut two days ago about 5 minutes at a time. I have to go slow because I have been so inactive for the last two years. I was also sick all that time but am great now and know I am going to make iot. Thanks for all the tips and sharing.

Hello, Orangeloft. No...I'm not a Red Hatter, though I think they have the right idea. We all need a little fun in our lives! Thanks for adding me to your friends' list; I have done likewise -- you're now on my list.
Djren, did I understand you right? Do you want to loose 168 lbs? If so take it day by day, and don't get discouraged. This site is great. I hit a point where I wasn't loosing, I was zig-zagging around 175, for the last few weeks. I was only eating between 600 and 700 cal. a day. Yesterday I raised it to 1000. I will most likely gain some for a while, but maybe after that I will start loosing again. The reason for this is I started reading about the body going into starvation mode. I had gastric by-pass surgery in 2002. gained 70 lbs. back after I got married, and decided I would never get back to 200 again. As of today I am down to 172. Oh I didn't say, I got back up to 190. I was 260 when I had the surgery. I started dieting the first of Nov. Luckly I didn't stretch my stomach back out after the surgery. Just eating the wrong foods. I am also lucky in the fact that I don't crave sweets. I don't miss them. I would eat them with my sweety, if they were there. I love my salt. I crave salty foods. My problem is trying to get all of the GOOD cal. in and the fluids that they say you need, lol. Good luck girl.
Happy Friday to All! I wasn't feeling that great the last two days but still managed to get my exercise done. Not what I had planned for but 1/2 hour each day. It is a struggle sometimes but we are all in the same boat. Have a great weekend and Happy Weight Loss!
And now it's Monday. Got your laundry done? Dunno about the rest of you, but my mother would have had a coronary if her wash wasn't on the line by 10 a.m. I didn't inherit that particular trait. A question for you....Does anybody else have a bladder the size of a thimble? And how does one with that particular problem reconcile that with "drink, drink, drink?" It seems to me that I spend half my life on the pot!
Just had a great OMG morning. I cannot wear what I have in pants any longer, they just don't stay up so I went to Walmart to see what I could get on sale for inbetween wear as I still have about 48 pounds to go.
I took four sizes in the dressing room, and to my big surprise they were all too big. I thought I might have gone down 2 may three sizes but I have gone down 5 sizes and even that is roomy.
I am in shock, I have only lost 54 pounds - do you go down a size each 10 lbs? Seems so with me anyhow.
What an incentive to keep going. Just thought I would share my happy event.

You go girl. congrates to amethystwalker. I live in Al. on the Gulf coast and it was 26 degrees this morning. Used the dryer this morning, lol. got two loads done. cleaning out bedroom and going thru clothes to get rid of for community club sale. So far having a good day. Oh and I increased my cal. to 1000 and so far haven't gained weight. I thought I would gain about 5 lbs. I guess I was in starvation mode. Oh well, live and learn.
Hi! I'm new here. I'll be 57 in March. I'm happily retired since 2003, after a 30-year career. Glad to be aboard!

Tomorrow will by 1 month I have been a member and I have learned so, so, much. a lot of nice and helpful people aboard. welcome to you. I am 59.95 plus tax,lol.(60)
Hey, 53 here for six more months. I gained quite a bit after I turned 50 (like 15 lbs. on 5'2" frame), but then my mom was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and my own blood pressure started going up, blah blah blah. Anyway, here I am! Thanks for sharing all your stories. I have lost a pound since joining two weeks ago: not as much as I'd like, but at least I'm going the right direction now. Hey, that's a good motto: I'm not trying to lose weight, I'm just trying to slow the gain!
I just signed up today so am soooo new at this... I am 51 and a grandma. Weight gain has always been an issue with me, I think about my weight & calories 24/7... I am a twin and, when I was young, was refered to as the 'fat one'... when I turned 13 years old I started a diet and have never stopped dieting since. In my mind I am a large boned big person but when I catch sight of myself in a photo I practically don't recognize who I am looking at... I try to maintain a weight range of 107-111 lbs. I always feel fat and weigh myself at least once a day... it is nice to read what others write.
