The Senior Corner - Are You Over 50?
September, 2008 - we now have a group! It's called 60s 70s and Higher! There are also age specific groups for all ages. Please stop in an join, and please do participate.
Time for all of us older members to get to know each other. All the youngsters have made themselves known so now it's our turn.
I was 65 in April, 2007, and happily retired.
How about you?
Carolin - welcome to the site, if you haven't been a member before it is a great place to be. I have found lots of advice and encouragement from many of the members. This post has been quiet for a while but if you also try and check out Lets Geturdone - Over 50's thread they are a very helpful bunch on there as well.
I think most of us are almost done hibernating.
It's been a long winter and spring is starting to crack through. I'm ready for some sunny day's. Having lot's of fog here but, that isn't stopping us here. Need to get out and shop for my goodies and veggies. I'm stuck again
at 192.5 ... I just don't get it... Slacking on the water intake AGAIN. Taking my long walks got on the incline tread mill man that is a workout. Has any one tried it yet? You will sweat.! I'll take my walk later this afternoon. I gotta break this plateau I'm in![]()
How long is the plateau?
Plateaus aren't always bad. Especially if you are losing a large amount of weight, it takes a change in your basic metabolism to maintain the new weight. That's one reason gradual loss is better than too-fast loss. The plateaus can be times when the adjustment process is in high gear. Once the shift happens, you'll start to lose again, provided you don't change your caloric balance (ie., keep the weight loss deficit going and keep exercising.)
You said you're sweating a lot, so this may not apply, but ... sometimes, when a plateau goes on too long, it's a sign you need to ramp up your exercise. Not the time as much as the intensity. Every 5-10 minutes or so during your walk, break into an all-out run for 1 minute. That kind of thing.
Are you also doing weight/resistance training? You need to build your muscle mass to effect that metabolic change. You won't gain muscle like body builders, but you will tone your muscles.
Also, have you been tracking your measurements? Muscle is heavier than fat, but takes up less space. So sometimes, your tape measure is a better guide of progress.
Just don't give up. We're here to kick your butt keep you motivated!
Hi all:
Male, 58, birthday in June. So i guess that means i finally reached "SeniorHood". Not really such a bad place to be. Married, wife is 61(yea, i like em older).hehe
We're both still working yet. She retires in just under 5 yrs., me a little over 7. So a ways off yet. We're in upstate NY. So after retirement gonna be one of them FL. snowbirds, if they still have any room left down there. Getting so can't take these winters anymore.
Joined CC+ cause didn't like what was looking back at me in the mirror. 5'5" @ 205lbs(scary). Started reduced caloric intake(1500) on 1/28/08, joined gym on 2/11/08, 5 days cardio,(60 min. day), 3 days strength(75 min.) Down to 182lbs. so guess it's working. Work construction, so have winters off, that's why have all time for work out now. Once back to work 12-14 hrs. day, no time, no energy, hope i can keep it off. Oh well, do what we can when we can.
Anyway, nice to meet you all. Nice to see there's a few men on here besides me.(no offense ladies)
Anyone feel free to say howdy anytime, and i'll get back as soon as i can.

Welcome, Sonny! Nice to have more testosterone about the place. Just remember that the estrogen still rules! ![]()
You sound really motivated. Good for you. And congratulations on your success.
Would I be raining on your parade a bit too much if I were to ask if you are sure you're not losing too fast? By your own report, you've lost 23 pounds in 1.5 months. That's more than twice the rate usually recommended as healthy.
Maybe it's different for men. But generally speaking, losing more than 2 pounds per week tends to lead to exactly the wrong kind of body responses -- slowed metabolism, increased fat storage, etc. That makes maintenance a nightmare.
But you are doing strength training, so maybe you just have that much more muscle. If your doc isn't worried, I guess I shouldn't be either.
Just thought I'd ask.

Thanx for the flowers from the welcome wagon. And as for the "estrogen rules",didn't take me to long to figure out how out numbered i was on this site![]()
Feel free to rain on the parade all ya want, goodness knows i don't have this stuff anywhere near figured out. And your math is flawless. Actually, i lost approx. 12#'s before i joined the gym, just friom the 1500 kcal intake. It wasn't till after i found this site, and done some reading that i found out i was doing it wrong. I have to admit, these BMR's, BMI's, eat meters, total cals. in, etc. etc. "still" have me somewhat confused. Actually, all i started to do was try to drop about 30/40 lbs. and keep it off. Then i started using the calculators, and found out what my weight vs ht., wt. age, should be that made me figure i was in worse health than i thought. And the fact that i have such a short time before the new work season starts that made me a little more gung-ho than i should be. Macho thing, you know. That seems to get alot of us guys in trouble!
But with the great people that seem to be here, selflessly giving info., and some more studying, and a little more "easy" does it, i guess it'll come around.
SORRY....somehow i know i didn't copy and paste the section of your reply that i wanted the right way. Guess it's obvious that i'm no" Puter Whiz" either.
Just wanted to say Good Morning to all
I'm off for a longwalk did OK on water yesterday... I think I should buy cases and cases and place them all around the house so that every where I turn there's a bottle for me![]()
Everyone have a GlORIS Day!

Hey, Nancy!
Welcome. You'll find other coutntry-men and -women at this site, eh? ![]()
This is a bit light on traffic; some of us have moved to the Get-ur-done 50+ thread, and you'd be welcome there, too.
Erm, your goal is towards the lowest end of your healthy BMI. Not knowing anything else about your body, I'm no judge. But the top of your range is 163 pounds. You know your body best, of course. For me, though, it would be too easy for me to give up because the goal is so difficult.

Glad to have ya!
Wanted to report ... I didn't walk today to cold outside. I headed for some water right now didn't do good on that either.
Hello, I've been going to post for some time but wanted to read all the previous posts first. I joined last Nov but started logging in Jan of this year. Really like the forums and atmosphere.
I just turned 70 at 5'6" 138-140 plateau for last 3 months. I've changed intake cals, zig-zagged them, just did the RE feed from This Article and think I'll break it now.
Glad to know y'all.
I turned 57 on Feb. 26th. Tomorrow it will be 1 year since I quit smoking and it will be my first weigh in for me. I joined one week ago tomorrow. I live in Toronto Ontario. I have been fighting the temptation of weighing myself. So tomorrow I'll let you all know if I lost any. See you then. Nice meeting you.

Hi there,
I am 52, very happily married ( got married at 50!!), have a 15 year old son (yep.. had him at 37).
I love knitting, gardening, playing my viola, reading, listening to music, mainly classical, but I also enjoy, Celtic, Bluegrass, Country, some alternative/international music, classic jazz, and blues.
I am a retired Chiropractor. I used to play viola professionally many years ago. Now I am homeschooling my 15 yr old son. He's a good kid and (voluntarily) listens to classical music.
My husband is a performance coach. We met on the internet... and knew the moment we saw each other that it was right. We are going to start building our "retirement home" (yeah.... right... we have so much we want to do) within the next couple of years.
I am hoping to become acquainted with you all, and am excited about this wonderful site.
Hi everyone. I've recently join CC and very happy to find this group. At 71, I may be the oldest one here (yikes!). At 5'6", 178 lbs, my goal is to lose 28 pounds, then go from there.
Some of my interests~~ watercolor painting, gardening, genealogy, VR photography.
Valerie
