The Senior Corner - Are You Over 50?
September, 2008 - we now have a group! It's called 60s 70s and Higher! There are also age specific groups for all ages. Please stop in an join, and please do participate.
Time for all of us older members to get to know each other. All the youngsters have made themselves known so now it's our turn.
I was 65 in April, 2007, and happily retired.
How about you?
Hi Ildako,
So sorry to hear about all the tough things that are happening in your life right now. It seems that when tough challenges happen in your life, they seem to bring you to your knees! And that's where I'm going with my advice. Get closer to your relationship with God, give it all to Him. And it's normal to feel sad and depressed with what you and your husband are going through. So many people run to the doctor for drugs to numb the pain. But take it from me, it will only surface again at a later time. It's best to take things a day at a time, do all you can do at the present and don't worry so much about the past. God will be there with you through it all, you'll see.
It's not easy when the world seems to be collapsing around you. You are going to need to stay strong. Find time for yourself each day to do something that makes you feel calm. It could be anything from doing crafts or gardening, to listening to music, or praying or meditating. Just a little pocket of time when you can retreat and regroup.
I'm helping to care for my mother and her sister. Mom is 95 and Aunt is 90. My mother is nearly blind and my aunt is getting there. They need help with just about everything. That means my brother and I are kept busy running back and forth. both he and I have our own health problems to deal with too. If I didnt' take just 15 minutes a day to sit outdoors and enjoy nature, or work on my drawing, I'd go crazy.
Be strong and you'll be fine.
Thanks everybody for your kind words.
My mom is in a nursing home and I try to look at in a positive light. I look at it as borrowed time to spend with her. She knows who I am but we don't have any conversations because she can't put thoughts together.
My mother-in-law is now in hospice because they found a tumor growing out of her pancreas and because of her having such a big stroke they can not do anything for her.
This is what I am trying to do. I am going to focus on what I can control. Taking care of my husband and my father-in-law. I am taking care of what is on my plate and I am not looking back on what I should have done but instead on what I can do now!
Hang in there everybody!
I joined this web site on May 1st but have not been very good about coming back to the web site and entering any data. I have just spent time today "looking around and found the The Senior Corner - how do I get into this "corner" because I definitely need support.
I am 66 and have learned I am type 2 diabetic and having a hard time staying on food regime. Exercise seems to be a "no-no" for me.
Please help?
This "corner" is pretty much blah lately. You might want to search for a diabetic thread or something along the lines of your planned attack for weight loss. The South Beach Diet thread is good.
Good luck.
Me,I am 61(almost). My b-day is on the 31st.I am trying to lose about 27 lbs. I know that is not really that much, but for me it is. I have been 98 lbs.,ever since I was 16,until,around 7 or 8 years ago.I don't like the fact that I get awlful tired, doing things(where I never did before),And I get winded when I do things,(never did that, either).
Hopefully,I will be doing better, since I found this place. Thanks,Weezy
59 here, got to lose more than my age as someone else said. Been on the site a couple of weeks now. LOVE! the food log, and I'm enjoying the community. I didn't know I liked to blog. I've been steadily getting better grades on my nutrition and eating fewer calories. I even bough a scale. 'sfunny, by eating more veggies, I seem to want to eat more veggies. Found some tasty salad greens at the local organic market--I mean this is downtown metropolitan Cartersville GA, actually a good place for "locally grown" food. Looking forward to a beautiful holiday weekend.
Hello, need_to_lose_wt, fancy meeting you here! Truly brave to post, and I hope you will use this site more because it is just too much fun. I like to focus on "eating healthy" with nutrition grades and lots of exercise help as well. It reminds me that this journey is a happy one of growth and improvement. It's not really torture and punishment for my past sins.
Great diet book: All Is Forgiven, Now Move On.
Well 61 here but I do not feel that way at all. Girl at the grocery store asked me if I wanted the "Senior Discount" and I told her to wait a few years more. I think a lot of us "baby boomers" really are proud of our generation. I do a lot of walking at work, one time I wore a pedometer and it totaled about 5 miles in one day which is the average I do all the time.

Hi everyone! I hope all of you are doing well.
My hubby will be looking for work this time next month. We have saved for retirement so we will be okay for a while. The business that he works for is shuting its doors due to not making any profit. The business is connected to the auto industry. He is a mechanical engineer and has been looking for work. Everybody has sent a letter back saying sorry but we have nothing for you at this time. He has experience and alot of very good references. Keep your fingers crossed.
I am 56 and my hubby will be 54 in Novemeber.
Have a GREAT WEEKEND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi all - 50 here (51 in November). I've been on CC since October last year and have lost 43 pounds so far. My goal is 139. This site has helped a lot. I keep a daily log book with me to enter everything I do. My family thinks I'm a bit obsessive about it but it works for me so I don't really care what they think... LOL. Everyone in the family is over weight by quite a bit and they all complain about it but aren't willing to change their habits to fix the problem. Oh well. Sorry the beautiful weekend is over and now it's back to work.
Hi susanfinkel!
Glad to meet you. Read your profile and am wondering if you are still eating 1200 calories? I've been on plateau for 6 months but don't want to go back to 1200 which is below my BMR.
Hey "old guys" Brent here, 59, happy. been on the site maybe 2 weeks. had my first "weigh-in" last wednesday and lost 6.5 pounds. i'm trying to keep the cals below 2000, and succeeding most days, but not all. i'm in the market for a nice used recumbent bike.
mischiefdm: busted that plateau yet? I more or less maintained my weight (250+) for years...but watching and counting and analyzing what I eat really turns me on, so I'm happy I found CC.
idako, how goes the job hunt? bad economy to be looking I know.
susanfinkel, you are doing really well. especially in the face of family pressure to "not change". That takes courage and strength as well as hope. I think you would be good to know!
Well, My husband is finding work for the people he works with but not for himself. I worry about him not myself.
Congrats to all of you that are doing so well! Stress has gotten to me this weekend but I am going to dust myself off and start a new!
Take Care!
Hello everyone! I'm new as of 2 days ago. I just turned 52 on June 8 so I think I've found the right place! I'm just trying to find my way around this place so I'll probably enter this into my journal in order to get back to it. I haven't figured out if there is a "bookmark" for this site. I also can't figure out how to "add a friend" yet. I've only read this page since there are so many previous posts. I'll just start from here on. See ya!

Hi everybody! I haven't stopped in to this thread for a long time. It's nice to see so many people have posted.
I've had a little health related drama in my life lately, which I wrote about in my journal. I'm ok but still upset at the thought that I might be going downhill. I'm a lot weaker, especially my legs, so I need to find ways to exercise that don't strain my heart.
My latest improvement was to buy a little pedaler. It's just the pedal part of a stationary bike that rests on the floor, and you can operate it sitting in a chair. A recumbent bike would have been very expensive and would take up most of my living room. This little gadget tucks into a corner. I put it in front of my chair when I'm watching TV. So far I'm able to pedal a minute at a time and then rest for 2 minutes. I can keep that up for about a half an hour. I plan is to increase it gradually and rest for shorter periods.
On the menu planning front, I'm back to eating more vegetables. Since I'm too weak to do all the chopping I've discovered those freezer/steamer bags. They are acceptable and not too expensive if you find them on sale. The most weight I lost was when I was eating 5 servings of vegetables a day and 2 of fruit. I eat the veggies first, before I have the protein and starch of the meal. It keeps me from overeating. I allow myself unlimited amounts of the lowest calorie vegetables.
Hope you are all doing well!
I am so sorry to hear you are having some health problems. I hope you can get back to where you were before.
I am deffinately no expert, but,it sounds like you're on the road to trying to be there.(Hope you make it).
As for me,I have lost a little bit of weight.(And I've gained, and lost some, again). But,this time I'm going to try real hard.I have found a walking program, that I am following. It is where you eat 3 meals a day,and after eating, you walk to a different walking tape, each day. I have written all of the meals(diet) and all of the tapes,(exercises) down, and I'm trying to follow them.It is suppose to let you lose some weight, for 10 days, and if I make it,I will follow the program, for much longer.
I have lost around 2 lbs. wish me luck in this one, too.
Well,I guess I had better hush,'cause I mainly wanted to tell you I hope you do get better.
PS: I don't know if this is easy or hard on your heart, but maybe you should look into it. Weezy
