Why has my sense of smell gone crazy?
Hey, the last 5 or 6 days my sense of smell has been more sensitive, and I've been getting grossed out by things that I normally like. For example, my husband was eating some creamy soup with a lot of garlic in it and the smell was so overwhelming I had to leave the room. Also the smell of the sponge I was doing dishes with last night stayed on my hands for hours and made everything I ate smell bad. This has also affected my appetite. I usually want to eat everything, now I don't want anything unless it is really appealing. Which I guess is a plus. But my husband is concerned about it, and I guess it's pretty weird, and it's a bummer to feel so grossed out so frequently. Any ideas? ps I know what you're thinking, but I'm definitely not pregnant.
How's your iron intake?... Some people with anaemia record an 'altered sense of taste' so an 'altered sense of smell' could be connected.
Damn, I was going to jump in with "pregnant!" ![]()
I have been iron-deficient in the past. Maybe that's come back since I've leaned towards a more vegan like diet as opposed to my usual pescatarianism. I will buy some rasins and see if that helps. Good tip!
Beans, chickpeas, dark green vegetables, dried apricots, egg yolks, lentils..... all contain a lot of iron. And if you consume them with Vitamin C that helps the body absorb the iron. Avoid caffeine as this limits absorption. As a safety-measure, take a daily multivitamin with iron.
Vegan diets (like every other diet) are not particularly healthy if you get the balance wrong... Reintroducing other foods would be a good idea if you have a tendency towards anaemia.
And, of course, if you still feel the same way despite increasing your iron intake than do see your doctor.
